Why Turning Away from God Can Harm Us

Understanding Why We Need Grace

In Plain Language: Why Do People Turn Away from God?

Imagine someone saying, deep down, “There is no God.” The Bible calls this person a fool—not because they’re unintelligent, but because they’re ignoring something important. It’s not just about logic; it’s about a heart that doesn’t want there to be a Judge or someone in charge. When someone wishes there’s no God, it’s often because they don’t want anyone holding them accountable for their actions. It’s like hoping there’s no teacher in the classroom so you can do whatever you want.

What Happens When We Ignore God?

The psalmist (the writer of Psalms) points out that when people turn away from God, their actions become corrupt and harmful. It’s not just a few bad apples—the problem is widespread. People do bad things, not because they’re all evil, but because the “disease” of sin has affected everyone. In other words, everyone, at some point, gets off track. If anything good comes from us, it’s not because we’re perfect—it’s because God helps us do good.

Why Does This Matter?

When we look at the world, it’s clear that people often make mistakes, hurt each other, and act selfishly. This isn’t just the fault of a few; it’s human nature. The psalmist urges us to recognize this and not pretend we’re always right or safe just because we think we’re good people. If we ignore God, we’re likely to fall into bad habits and choices. People who don’t pray or ask for God’s help can’t expect to live truly good lives, because they’re missing out on the guidance and strength that comes from Him.

Is There Hope?

The answer is yes! The psalmist encourages us to be sad about the corruption in the world, but also to look for hope in God’s grace. We need a new start—a “rebirth”—and that happens when we connect with God and accept His help. The Bible says we shouldn’t settle for anything less than being united with Christ and letting His Spirit make us new.

Looking Forward: Why We Need Salvation

True joy and safety aren’t found in this world as it is. The psalmist longs for a day when the Messiah (Christ) comes to fix what’s broken. That’s the hope Christians have: that one day, all evil and suffering will end, and everyone who trusts in God will celebrate together forever. Until then, we can comfort each other with this hope, even when we see sin and hardship all around us.

What Can We Learn?

·      Turning away from God leads to bad choices and corruption.

·      Everyone needs help; nobody is perfect on their own.

·      The hope for a better world comes from God’s promise to change things for the better.

·      We need God’s grace and a new start to truly live good lives.

·      Let’s encourage each other to look forward to a time when all wrongs will be made right.

In simple terms: We all mess up, but God offers us a way to be better. Let’s not ignore Him, but instead seek His help, and look forward to a brighter future.

Gracious God, we look around and see the brokenness and corruption in our world, and our hearts are heavy. Yet, just as the psalmist did, we turn our eyes to Your grace and the hope You provide. Thank You for offering us a new beginning—a true rebirth—through Your love and the gift of Christ. Help us not to settle for less than being made new by Your Spirit. Remind us daily that our true joy and safety are found in You alone, and let us hold tightly to the hope that one day, all things will be made right. Until that day, give us courage to comfort each other and share Your hope with a hurting world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
