Why Has the Church of Jesus Christ Become So Judgmental and Divided?

Understanding Separation and Judgment in Plain Language

Throughout history, the Church of Jesus Christ—by which people often mean the larger Christian church or its many branches—has sometimes developed a reputation for being judgmental and divided. Many people wonder how a movement founded on Jesus’ messages of love and unity ended up so full of different beliefs and, at times, harsh attitudes toward others. Let’s look at this in simple terms.

What Was Jesus’ Original Message?

Jesus taught about loving God and loving others. He welcomed people from all walks of life—rich or poor, powerful or outcasts. His message was about forgiveness, compassion, and bringing people together, not pushing them apart.

So Why Did Judgment and Division Happen?

After Jesus’ time, as the number of believers grew, people started to understand his teachings in different ways. Over centuries, these different interpretations led to new groups or “denominations”—like Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox, and many others. Each group developed its own beliefs, traditions, and rules.

Sometimes, people in these groups felt very strongly that their way was the “right” way. This passion can be a good thing, but it can also turn into judgment—thinking less of others who believe differently. Instead of focusing on the core message of love and acceptance, some became more concerned with defending their own beliefs.

Other Reasons for Division and Judgment

  • Cultural Differences: As Christianity spread to different countries, each culture added its own customs and ideas, making the church look and act differently in various places.
  • Power and Politics: At times, church leaders were also political leaders. This mix of religion and politics led to struggles for control and more reasons to separate.
  • Fear and Uncertainty: Sometimes, when people are unsure or afraid, they cling even more tightly to their own group and judge others to feel safe or right.

What Can Be Done?

It’s important to remember that the heart of Jesus’ message is love, understanding, and humility. Many Christians today are working to bridge these divides, focusing on what unites rather than what separates. The hope is that by returning to these basics, the Church can become less judgmental and more welcoming—just as Jesus intended.

In closing, while divisions and judgment have shaped much of church history, there remains a powerful opportunity for believers to realign with the true spirit of Jesus’ teachings. By approaching one another with humility, a willingness to listen, and a commitment to love, the church can rediscover its purpose as a force for good in the world.

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to teach us love, unity, and compassion. Help us set aside judgment and pride, and instead embrace one another with open hearts. Guide us to build bridges where there are divides and to seek understanding over conflict. May Your Spirit lead us to reflect Your grace in all we do, making the church a true home for all Your children. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
