A Personal Reflection on True Greatness
What Makes a Person Truly Great?
What does it mean to be great? Our world is quick to offer answers: intelligence, influence, and financial success seem to top the list. We often find ourselves measuring one another—and ourselves—by how much we know, how strong we are, or what we possess. These standards shape so much of our daily lives, from the ambitions we pursue to the way we define our own worth.
But in Jeremiah 9:23-24, God gently stands us in front of a different mirror. The passage reads, “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight.” Suddenly, we are invited to consider greatness from God’s perspective—a perspective that doesn’t start with our accomplishments, but with our relationship with Him.
Earthly Achievements: Why Wisdom, Strength, and Wealth Are Not Lasting Measures
Earthly achievements are not meaningless, but they are fleeting. Wisdom fades, strength wanes, and wealth can vanish as quickly as it appears. We see it all around us: reputations built over decades can topple overnight; brilliant minds are eventually forgotten. If our identity is tied to these things, we’re left on unstable ground. The pressure to keep performing, achieving, or possessing more can wear out even the strongest heart. God’s word reminds us that these measures are temporary and, ultimately, insufficient for defining who we are.
God’s Perspective: The Call to Boast in Knowing and Understanding God
God invites us to something deeper—a relationship with Himself. This isn’t about boasting in what we have, but in who we know. To “know and understand” God is to enter into a relationship where His character shapes our lives. It means recognizing that our true worth isn’t found in our résumé or bank account, but in the fact that we are loved by the God who created us and calls us His own. In God’s eyes, greatness flows not from what we achieve, but from whom we are becoming as we walk with Him.
Understanding Righteousness: What It Means to Align with God’s Character
Righteousness is a word that can sound intimidating, but at its heart, it means being right with God and living in a way that reflects His character. Righteousness isn’t about being perfect; it’s about aligning our lives with God’s standards—loving what He loves, pursuing what matters to Him, and allowing His justice, kindness, and faithfulness to shape our actions and attitudes.
In practical terms, righteousness shows up in everyday moments: choosing honesty when a shortcut tempts us, seeking justice for those overlooked, forgiving when it’s hard, or extending kindness to someone in need. Aligning with God’s heart means letting His values redefine our priorities, our relationships, and even our ambitions.
Why Righteousness Matters: God’s Delight in Justice, Faithfulness, and Righteousness
Why does God care so much about righteousness? Because it reflects who He is. God delights in justice, faithfulness, and righteousness because these qualities restore, heal, and bring hope to a broken world. When we live out these values, we participate in God’s healing work. We become people who stand up for what’s right, love with genuine compassion, and hold fast to our commitments. This is the kind of greatness God celebrates—not self-promotion, but faithful living that brings His love and justice into the world.
Practical Takeaways: How to Live Out These Values Daily
· Focus on Relationship, Not Resume: Spend time with God through prayer, scripture, and worship. Let your sense of worth come first from knowing Him.
· Examine Your Ambitions: Ask yourself regularly: “Am I chasing things that matter to God, or just what impresses others?” Adjust your goals accordingly.
· Practice Daily Kindness and Justice: Look for ways to do what is right, even in small things—speak up for someone who is left out, go the extra mile to serve, or forgive when wronged.
· Value People Over Possessions: Invest in relationships, showing love and grace as God has shown you.
· Reflect on God’s Character: When faced with decisions, ask, “What would show God’s righteousness, justice, or faithful love here?”
Conclusion: Finding Lasting Worth in a Relationship with God
In a world that is always moving the goalposts, God offers us a different way—a foundation that never shifts. When we find our worth in knowing Him, we discover a greatness that cannot be taken away by changing circumstances or fading accomplishments. His values become our anchor, His love our confidence. Lasting worth isn’t something we earn or achieve; it’s a gift we receive as we walk in relationship with God, embracing His righteousness and living out His values, day by day.
