Growing Deeper in Faith: Lessons from Hebrews 6

How to Move Beyond the Basics and Hold Tight to God’s Promises

Have you ever watched a child learn to ride a bike? At first, they use training wheels, wobbly but excited. Eventually, those training wheels come off, and they start to ride with confidence and freedom. Our journey of faith is a lot like that. We start with the basics, but God wants us to grow stronger, deeper, and more secure in Him—just like learning to ride without training wheels.

Moving Beyond the Basics

Hebrews 6 encourages us to move past the basics of our faith. It’s kind of like starting school—at first, we learn the ABCs and 123s, but we don’t stay there forever. We grow, learn new things, and become more mature. In our faith, that means not just sticking with what we learned first but letting God teach us deeper truths and shape our hearts as we follow Jesus. The writer says, “Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity” (Hebrews 6:1).

The Danger of Turning Away

But there’s a warning, too. Hebrews 6 talks about the danger of turning away from God after having learned about Him. Imagine a field that soaks up rain and grows good crops—that’s like a person who listens to God and lets His Word change them. But if the field only grows thorns, it’s not useful. The writer is saying: don’t just hear God’s truth—let it produce good things in your life! It’s a reminder to keep our hearts soft and open, not hard or distracted.

Hope for the Faithful

Here’s the good news: God sees every act of love, kindness, and service you do in His name. Hebrews 6:10 says, “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him.” So, even when it feels like no one notices your efforts, God does. Keep going, even when it’s hard. He’s cheering you on and promises to help you finish strong!

God’s Promises Won’t Change

Think about Abraham in the Bible. God made him a promise, and even though Abraham had to wait a long time, he kept trusting. God kept His word, just as He always does. Hebrews 6:17-18 says God’s promises are unchangeable—He never lies or lets us down. When things feel shaky or uncertain, you can hold onto God’s trustworthy word just as Abraham did.

Hope: The Anchor for Our Souls

Here’s one of my favorite pictures from Hebrews 6:19: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” Think about a boat in a storm—an anchor keeps it from drifting away. God’s hope does that for us. No matter how wild life gets, Jesus holds us steady. Our hope in Him is strong and can’t be shaken.
