Overcoming Offense: A Path to Spiritual Growth

Shifting Your Mindset to God’s Standard and Reaching New Levels

Faith is one of the most powerful forces in a believer’s life, enabling us to move mountains and walk in purpose. Yet, faith can be subtly hindered when we fall into the common but dangerous trap of offense. When we agree with offense and allow it to become embedded in our soul, it acts as a spiritual snare, blocking progress and clouding our relationship with God.

The Trap of Offense: How It Holds Us Back

Offense often begins as a reaction to a perceived wrong, hurtful word, or injustice. If left unchecked, it transforms into bitterness that seeps into our hearts and minds. The real danger arises when offense is not only felt but agreed with—when we justify our feelings and allow them to linger, they become part of our inner narrative. This agreement gives offense a foothold, and before long, our faith is weighed down by the heaviness of unresolved wounds.

Faith thrives in an environment of freedom, forgiveness, and trust in God’s sovereignty. Offense, however, fosters resentment, suspicion, and division. It keeps us tethered to past hurts, preventing us from embracing the new things God wants to do in our lives. The Apostle Paul wrote about forgetting what is behind and pressing toward what is ahead—a mindset incompatible with holding onto offense.

Shifting to God’s Standard: Renewing the Mind

To break free, our minds must shift to a new way of thinking and processing—one that is rooted in God’s standard of excellence. This means choosing forgiveness over resentment, humility over pride, and love over judgment. By renewing our minds through Scripture and prayer, we begin to see offenses for what they are: traps designed to keep us from God’s best.

·      Recognize the Snare: Offense is a deliberate strategy to derail your spiritual progress. Acknowledge it as a trap, not as your identity.

·      Choose Forgiveness: Release those who have wronged you into God’s hands. Forgiveness is not excusing the offense but freeing yourself from its grip.

·      Align with Excellence: Let God’s word define your reactions, not the actions of others. Aim for His standard in every thought and response.

Discernment: The Key to the Next Level

Reaching the next level of faith requires spiritual discernment. You must be vigilant, recognizing the subtle ways offense tries to infiltrate your life. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any lingering hurts and to give you the strength to let go. Remember, you cannot carry yesterday’s burdens into tomorrow’s promises.

When you discern the trap of offense and refuse to let it become embedded in your soul, you break free from the cycle of being stuck in past wrongs. This freedom enables you to press into the new level God has prepared for you—one marked by peace, fruitfulness, and unwavering faith.

Today, choose to agree with God’s truth, not with the snare of offense. Let your faith rise above past hurts, and step boldly into the new season He is calling you to.
