How to Rely on God in Everyday Life
Trusting in the Lord is one of those concepts that can feel larger than life. It’s something we hear in church, read in scripture, and perhaps even talk about with others, but how do we live it out in real, practical ways? For me, it’s been a journey—one full of moments of doubt, surrender, and ultimately peace. Let’s break it down into real-life terms using the timeless wisdom found in Proverbs 3:5-6.
What Does It Mean to Trust in the Lord?
The phrase “Trust in the Lord with all your heart” (Proverbs 3:5) invites us to go beyond simply believing in God; it asks us to place our full confidence in Him. For me, this means trusting in God’s wisdom, power, and love—even when life doesn’t make sense. It’s like saying, “God, I don’t understand why this is happening right now, but I trust You have a plan.”
I’ve found that trusting in the Lord often requires letting go of my need for control. Sometimes, I want to figure things out on my own or depend on my gut instincts, but those can lead me astray. Trusting God reminds me that He sees the bigger picture, even when I cannot.
Don’t Rely Only on Yourself
The second part of Proverbs 3:5 says, “Lean not on your own understanding.” Have you ever thought you had all the answers, only to realize you were way off-track? That happens to me more often than I care to admit. This verse is a gentle reminder that my understanding of life is limited. God’s perspective, however, is infinite.
In real life, this might look like pausing before making a big decision. Instead of rushing ahead, I try to pray, asking God for wisdom and clarity. It’s humbling to admit I don’t have all the answers, but it’s liberating too—I don’t have to figure it all out alone.
Include God in All Areas of Your Life
Proverbs 3:6 says, “In all your ways acknowledge Him.” This verse has taught me that trusting God isn’t just for monumental life choices but also for the small, everyday moments. Whether I’m deciding how to spend my weekend or how to handle a frustrating conversation, acknowledging God means inviting Him into those spaces.
For example, I’ve started thanking God for the little things—like finding a parking spot when I’m in a hurry or having an unexpectedly good day. These small acknowledgments remind me that God cares about every detail of my life, not just the big-ticket items.
God Will Guide You
The promise in Proverbs 3:6 is one of my favorite parts: “He will make straight your paths.” It doesn’t mean life will magically become easy, but it does mean God will guide me through it. When I trust in Him, I feel a sense of clarity and direction that I could never achieve on my own.
For instance, there were moments in my life when I faced big uncertainties—like changing careers or dealing with a personal setback. In those times, I leaned on God through prayer and scripture and found peace knowing He was guiding me, even if the path wasn’t immediately clear.
Taking Refuge in the Lord
Another aspect of trusting God is taking refuge in Him. Psalm 118:8 says, “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.” For me, this means recognizing that God’s promises are more reliable than anything the world can offer. When life feels overwhelming, I turn to Him as my shelter.
Trusting God’s Promises
Whenever I feel uncertain or afraid, I reflect on verses like Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” These words remind me that God doesn’t just listen—He actively helps, providing comfort and strength.
Turning to God in Struggles
During tough times, I’ve found that trusting God often means surrendering my fears to Him. It’s not always easy, but it’s comforting to say, “Lord, I’m scared, but I know You are here with me.” That act of surrender has brought me peace time and again.
Living a Life of Trust
Trusting God isn’t just something to do when life gets hard—it’s a continuous way of life. It means following His teachings, like forgiving others or showing kindness, even when it feels difficult. Trust is faith in action, and living it out is one of the most rewarding challenges I’ve embraced.
Examples from Scripture
The Bible is full of beautiful examples of God as a protector. Psalm 91:1 says, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” This imagery comforts me—no matter what storms come my way, God is my safe haven.
In Summary
Learning to trust in the Lord has been a journey of surrender, faith, and reliance. It’s about letting go of pride, fear, and the need for control, and instead leaning into God’s wisdom and love. Whether life is smooth sailing or full of challenges, trusting in Him means knowing I’m not alone. He promises to guide me, protect me, and strengthen me every step of the way.
So, if you’re ever unsure or overwhelmed, take a moment to pause and trust. Invite God into your heart and your decisions, big or small, and let His peace guide you. Trusting in the Lord isn’t just an idea—it’s a life-changing practice that brings strength and clarity, even in the hardest times.
