Why Comfort Can Dull Our Spiritual Experience in Church

Understanding What Happens When We Lose Sight of Our Spiritual Purpose

Have you ever noticed how sometimes going to church can feel more like a routine than a spiritual experience? Maybe it’s become just another thing to check off the weekly to-do list, or maybe it feels more like a social club than a place to encounter God. This can happen when the church—meaning the people, not just the building—becomes comfortable in the flesh.

What Does “Comfortable in the Flesh” Mean?

Simply put, it means the church starts caring more about things that make us feel good or safe in our human nature, rather than focusing on what God wants for us. We might get caught up in appearances, traditions, or activities, and forget the deeper reason why we gather: to grow closer to God, be transformed, and help others do the same.

How Does It Happen?

·      Routine Over Relationship: We go through the motions—singing, listening, attending—without expecting God to change us.

·      Comfort Over Challenge: We avoid tough conversations or ignore what the Bible says if it makes us uncomfortable.

·      Fitting In Over Standing Out: We focus more on being accepted by those around us than on living out our faith, even when it’s hard.

·      Programs Over People: We get busy with church programs and forget to truly love and serve those in need.

Why Is This a Problem?

When the church gets too comfortable in the flesh, it stops being a light in the world and starts blending in with it. The power and purpose that come from following Jesus fade into the background. We miss out on real transformation and the chance to make a difference in our families, communities, and beyond.

What Can We Do About It?

·      Seek God First: Come to church expecting to meet God, not just to go through the motions.

·      Be Open to Change: Let God’s Word and Spirit challenge you—even when it’s uncomfortable.

·      Focus on Loving Others: Remember that church isn’t just about us. We’re called to love and serve people inside and outside the church walls.

·      Stay Humble: Admit when we’ve gotten comfortable, and ask God to help us grow.

In short, church isn’t supposed to be about comfort zones or just “feeling good.” It’s about being transformed by God and making a real impact in the world. Let’s not settle for comfort when God is calling us to so much more!
