“Our God is in the heavens; He does all that He pleases.”
(Psalm 115:3)
The Lord is God. There is only one true God who is the sovereign ruler of the universe. The world belongs to Him because He made it. He is sovereign over the whole world, and all that happens in it. There are no limits to His rule. He is a good God, but He is also a just and holy God who cannot endure human wickedness indefinitely because of the moral corruption and defilement it causes His world, and the grief is caused Him (Gen. 6:6). The Lord’s sovereignty is universal. He is the rightful ruler of the whole universe (Ps. 9:3; 96:10).
In writing this series of posts I hope to encourage and enlighten believers to the importance of understanding God’s sovereignty over everything that is happening in the world today. I pray that just as Paul encouraged the church of Ephesus, “the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe., (Eph. 1:18-19).
The sovereignty of God is defined as His absolute right to do all things according to His own good pleasure ( Daniel 4:25 Daniel 4:35 ; Romans 9:15-23 ; 1 Timothy 6:15 ; Revelation 4:11 ).
As conflicts rage all over the world over economic distress, wars and rumors of wars, political upheaval, suspicions and accusations, etc., we can learn much from the book of Daniel. Daniel tells us about the wisdom, might, and truth of the great God who rules history and reveals His sovereignty in acts of judgment and mercy toward individuals and nations according to His own good pleasure.
Daniel forms a dramatic reminder that the God of Israel is King of king’s and Lord of lords “that Heaven rules” (Dan. 4:26). God’s hand is on history, “His story,” the unfolding of His eternal plan, and that the Kingdom that will triumph in the end is God’s. The truth disclosed in Daniel chapter 4 is that God is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and that He appoints and sets over it whomever He will (Dan. 4:17, 25; 5:21). He knows and foreknows all things. He will have the last word, both in world history and in the destiny of every man. His kingdom, justice and righteousness will triumph in the end.
Daniel was given view of God’s Administration of Justice. Daniel saw Almighty God take His position in the courtroom of Heaven to render justice on the earth (Dan. 7:9-10).
The Lord loves righteousness and justice. He foils the plans of nations and thwarts the plans of people that are contrary to His Kingdom and eternal purposes.
“The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance. From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth—he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do” (Ps. 33:5-15).
I previously wrote several blog posts related to righteousness and justice that can be read on this site. In part 2 of this post I will be sharing a little about the Kingdom of God.
Shalom!
