Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty,” — Psalm 104:1
The Majesty of God
What can I say that has not already been said in the Scriptures about God’s majesty. The word majesty comes from the Latin word maiestatem (nominative maiestas) “greatness, dignity, elevation, honor, excellence,” 1
Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.” 1 Chronicles 29:11
“For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.” –Isaiah 57:15
“Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty,” — Psalm 104:1
“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” — Hebrews 1:3
God is Holy
““There is none holy like the Lord; there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God.” — 1 Samuel 2:2
“Since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” -1 Peter 1:16
“And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”” — Revelation 4:8
The Lord is Wise
“To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. –Jude 1:25
What does the Scriptures mean when they call God wise? In Scripture, wisdom is a moral as well as intellectual quality. It is more than mere intelligence. J. I. Packer in Knowing God said, “Wisdom is the power to see and the inclination to choose the best and highest goal, together with the surest means of attaining it.” God’s wisdom never fails.
In Strong’s Concordance wisdom (02451) (chokmah) comes from the verb chakam – to be wise). It is the ability to judge correctly and to follow the best course of action, based on knowledge and understanding. Wisdom is the ability to see something from God’s viewpoint. Wisdom is “God’s character in the many practical affairs of life.”2
Chokmah is the knowledge and the ability to make the right choices at the opportune time. The consistency of making the right choice is an indication of one’s spiritual maturity. The prerequisite for this “wisdom” is the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:7). “Wisdom” is personified as crying out for disciples who will do everything to pursue her (Proverbs 1:20). The person who seeks chokmah diligently will receive understanding: (Proverbs 2:6) and will benefit in life by walking with God (Proverbs 2:20, cf Galatians 5:16).
The Grace of God
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” –Ephesians 2:8-9
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9
“For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.” –Romans 6:14
“But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.” –Romans 11:6
May the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. –Philippians 4:7
Blessings,
Dr. A.
