Healing the Soul of America

“But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. For this reason it says, Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you” (Ephesians 5:13-14).

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have said they are fighting for the ‘soul’ of America. It is a phrase that has been regularly invoked by Democratic and Republican leaders. “This campaign isn’t just about winning votes. It’s about winning the heart and, yes, the soul of America,” Joseph R. Biden Jr. said in August at the Democratic National Convention. The 2021 election was one of the ugliest and most divisive American presidential campaigns in our history. Prior to that, the previous four years began to expose an ugly side of American and evangelical politics, white nationalism, extremism, racism, greed and selfishness, and poverty of spirit or spiritual poverty (lack of our awareness for our need of God). Many on the right were not happy and tried relentlessly to change the 2020 election outcome. Some of them assert that they like Trump’s policies; his ethical violations or his abuses of his office for personal gain don’t bother them. These views come from deep conviction, and at this point, they can’t be changed.1 What’s not understood is that God is a just God who hates injustice. I believe that in these last days the 2020 election and attempted January 6 coup reveals a deeper, darker America than ever before.

“Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.”

John Lewis

God has quite a bit to say about nations. Some of the most crucial scriptures to understanding the heart of God and nations is found in Acts 17:26-30. Apostle Paul in his sermon on Mars Hill, “stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I see that you are very religious in all respects. For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.” (Acts 17:22-23). There are times we can become so beholding to people and enamored with things that we began to worship them instead of the living God.

Paul goes on to say, “The God who made the world and everything that is in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made by hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might feel around for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His descendants.’  Therefore, since we are the descendants of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by human skill and thought.

Paul is standing on Mars Hill in the city of Athens, surrounded by the intellectuals of the city. He observed that these Athenians have an altar in the city to an “Unknown God.” And so he says, “I also found an altar with this inscription, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ Therefore, what you worship in ignorance.” Another way to say that would be: “The time of your ignorance is over.” “So having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now proclaiming to mankind that all people everywhere are to repent, because He has set a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all people by raising Him from the dead.”

The time of ignorance are over. God is the only righteous judge. Paul knew well that there was nothing that would overcome the reluctance of the human heart but the grace and mercy of God. God created all the various nations from one man and God himself determines how long a nation survives and how far its borders extend. He gives each and every person the opportunity to repent and be saved. The evil spirit of racism, hatred for our fellowman, and the spirit of pride will not exist in God’s kingdom. God created from one man, Adam, all the nations of the earth. That word nation means ethnos or ethnic groups. When we truly understand God’s love for His creation, the sin of racism and pride can be overcome. All Christians alike, no matter what their race, status, or sex, stand on the same footing of sonship before God. There is a unity or solidarity in the Christian body. What is true of one is true of all. We will be able to tackle the strongholds of nationalism, extremism, racism, nativism and isolationism satan uses to hinder America from fully embracing it’s place in the world.

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge..”

Issac Asimov

I believe that healing the soul of this nation begins with the church taking a righteous stand for God’s truth. Throughout the years evangelical Christianity has morphed into something of great concern. Rightwing evangelicals have been reshaping American politics and faith for years. I have only began to study American religion and politics after the Holy Spirit spoke to me about healing the soul of America in October 2018. I honestly had no idea what the Spirit was referring to until I began to see the steady decline of a once powerful nation and the church. Keep in mind, many nations of the earth need healing today including America. Many nations have been robbed of the heritage God intended for them.

This is the hour when the battleground is over the soul of mankind. In the face of racism, hatred, brutality, murder, and violence, we must reaffirm our values and commitment as caring, loving people. Many of us want to see change in America but we must be willing to allow God’s Spirit to change our hearts by laying down our pride, our own opinions and agendas. We must repent and lay it all down and come into the knowledge of God’s truth revealed in His Word. Do not be like the Pharisees who were in love with their own ways and opinions and exaltation of their wisdom, or you will miss the move of God’s Spirit even when it is right before your eyes.

But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings;” (Mal. 4:2).

May the Lord’s blessing be with you. May He lay a firm foundation of the testimony of Jesus in your life!
