What Does It Really Mean to Have an Abundant Life?

Looking Beyond “Having More”—A Simple Reflection on John 10:10

When you hear the phrase “abundant life,” what comes to mind? For many, especially Christians, there’s a temptation to think it means having plenty of things—money in the bank, a nice house, health, maybe even a bit of fame. But if we look at what Jesus actually said in John 10:10, the message is much deeper and richer than just having stuff.

Jesus said, “I came that you might have life, and have it abundantly.” He’s not just talking about living longer or collecting more possessions. In fact, that verse comes as a contrast: He’s comparing Himself to a thief who only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. The “thief” here isn’t just a literal robber, but represents anything or anyone that leads us away from real life—things that promise happiness or fulfillment, but leave us empty in the end.

So what is this “abundant life” that Jesus offers? It’s not just about quantity, but quality. It’s not about the size of your paycheck or the number of your followers. It’s about a different kind of richness—a life that’s full, deep, and meaningful. This is a life where you know you are loved by God, where you’re forgiven, and where you can find peace even when things around you are tough.

Think of it this way: Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd. In ancient times, shepherds took care of their sheep, making sure they found green pastures, safe water, and protection from danger. A good shepherd would even risk their own life for the flock. That’s exactly what Jesus did—He willingly gave up His life for us, so that we could be free from the burden and punishment of sin. His sacrifice wasn’t just for show; it was to open the door for us to have a new kind of life, right here and now.

Abundant life means you have:

·      Peace in the middle of chaos, because you know God is with you.

·      Purpose in your everyday, because you’re part of something bigger than yourself.

·      Joy that doesn’t come from things that fade away, but from a relationship that lasts forever.

·      Grace—knowing you’re forgiven and loved, no matter what.

This doesn’t mean life will always be easy or that you’ll never struggle. The “abundance” Jesus talks about isn’t about having a trouble-free existence, but about having a life that overflows with hope, meaning, and love—no matter the circumstances.

So, the next time you hear someone say “God wants you to live an abundant life,” remember: It’s not just about what you own, but about who owns your heart. It’s not about having more things, but about knowing and being known by Jesus, the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for you. That’s the real abundance—one that nothing and no one can take away.

If you’re searching for more, maybe the “more” you’re really after is not in the things you can buy or achieve, but in the life that only Jesus can give—life to the full, life overflowing, life abundant.
