Crossing the Jordan: What It Means for Us Today

A Simple Reflection on God’s Promises and Our Journeys

Life often feels like a winding adventure, full of twists, turns, and the occasional obstacle that seems impossible to overcome. When I think about my own journey, I remember that powerful story from the Bible—when the children of Israel faced the daunting task of crossing the Jordan River. It’s a story packed with meaning, not just for the people back then, but for anyone who’s ever waited, hoped, or faced uncertainty.

The Big Picture: The Jordan as a Barrier and a Gateway

Imagine standing on the banks of a river you’ve heard about all your life. The Jordan wasn’t just any river—it was the last big hurdle before entering the Promised Land, the place God had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob centuries before. Generations had dreamed about this land, described as “flowing with milk and honey,” but reaching it required faith, courage, and trust.

For the Israelites, the Jordan River was more than water. It represented the boundary between wandering and arriving, between promise and reality. Crossing it wasn’t just a matter of geography—it was a leap of faith.

Miracles as Markers: God’s Signature Moves

The story goes that the river was at flood stage—a time when crossing would have been most dangerous and intimidating. Yet, God chose that exact moment to show His power. Joshua, who led the Israelites after Moses, told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you” (Joshua 3:5).

When the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant stepped into the water, the river stopped flowing, and the people walked across on dry ground. That wasn’t the first time God had parted waters—the Red Sea had been split years before when Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt. In both cases, God made a way where there was none, reminding everyone that no obstacle is too big for Him.

Why Did God Do This?

It wasn’t just about flexing divine muscle. God wanted the Israelites—and everyone else—to know that He was present, powerful, and faithful. As Joshua said, “This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites” (Joshua 3:10). God was fulfilling promises made generations before, showing that He keeps His word.

Remembering the Miracle

After crossing, the Israelites built a memorial using stones from the riverbed, so they—and future generations—would never forget what happened. These stones were a physical reminder: When you see them, remember what God did here. Every time someone passed by, they’d retell the story. It wasn’t just history; it was a living testimony.

Looking Back and Looking Forward

Each of us has our own “Jordan”—a challenge or uncertainty that stands between where we are and where we want to be. Maybe it’s a dream you’ve held onto for years, a promise you’ve waited for, or simply the hope of better days. It’s easy to get discouraged, especially when the river looks wide and the current strong.

The Israelites had waited a long time—almost forty years in the wilderness, hoping for a chance to enter the land God had promised. The earlier generation missed out because of unbelief, but a new generation stood poised to step into something new. Can you imagine their feelings? Excitement, anxiety, anticipation—all swirling as they gazed at the swollen river and thought about the unknown ahead.

God’s Promises: Yes and Amen

One of the most comforting truths in the story is that God’s promises don’t have expiration dates. What He said to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob stood true even after centuries had passed. The same is true for us. Sometimes we wait for days, months, or even years for an answer or breakthrough. But God’s timing is perfect, and His Word is sure.

True, crossing wasn’t easy. There were doubts and fears. The Israelites faced not only the river but also fortified cities and strong nations on the other side. Still, God went ahead of them, making a way. Joshua reminded them—and us—that God’s power isn’t limited by circumstances. The message rings true: “God’s work is perfect, He will keep His people. Jordan’s flood cannot keep out Israel, Canaan’s force cannot turn them out again.”

Making It Personal: Our Modern-Day Jordans

So, what does crossing the Jordan mean for us today? Life presents its own rivers—challenges that seem insurmountable, moments where hope feels thin. Maybe it’s finances, relationships, health, or just the uncertainty of what’s next. The story of the Jordan reminds us that God’s presence is with us, even when things look bleak.

Sometimes, when everything seems “dried up,” it’s not the end—it’s a chance to see God work in new ways. Maybe your faith is being stretched, your patience tested, your trust deepened. Remember, God knows what you need, and He promises to supply “according to His riches and glory.” There’s no limit to what He can do, even if the way forward looks blocked.

Signs and Markers: Remembering God’s Faithfulness

Just as the Israelites built a memorial, it’s important for us to recognize and remember the times God has come through. Think back on your life—are there moments when you felt stuck, only to see a door open or a problem solved in a way you couldn’t have imagined? Those are your “stones”—reminders that God’s hand is at work.

It’s easy to forget in the rush of daily life. That’s why we need reminders—not just for ourselves, but for those who come after us. Share your stories, look for the markers, build your own memorials of faith.

Encouragement for the Journey

The crossing of the Jordan wasn’t just about reaching a physical place—it was about entering into God’s promises and trusting Him with the journey. Whether you’re waiting for something big, facing a challenge, or just trying to make sense of where you are, know this: God is faithful. He goes ahead of you. He makes a way where there seems to be no way.

The Israelites didn’t cross the river by their own strength. They followed God’s lead, stepped out in faith, and saw miracles happen. You can do the same. Don’t be afraid to step forward, even if the river seems high and the path unclear.

Blessings for Today

May you find courage to face your own Jordan, trust in the promises that God has spoken over your life, and see His hand at work in ways you never expected. Remember, all of God’s promises are Yes and Amen. The journey may be long, the waiting hard, but the destination is worth it.

Look for the signs and markers along the way—they’re reminders of His faithfulness. When the waters part and you step onto dry land, let it be a testimony of God’s power and love. And as you travel through your own wilderness, keep your eyes on the promise, knowing that the same God who parted the Jordan is with you every step of the way.

Blessings,
