How Anyone Can Grow Closer to God Day by Day
If you’ve ever wondered how to build a real, meaningful relationship with God, you’re not alone. Many people want to feel closer to God but aren’t sure how to get there. “Cultivating a deep desire for God” sounds complicated. It’s really about making a genuine effort, little by little, every day. This effort is to know God more and let Him shape your life.
What Does It Mean to Desire God?
At its core, having a desire for God isn’t just about feeling something in your heart. It’s about an ongoing choice to seek Him with all you have: your thoughts, your emotions, and your actions. The Bible talks a lot about this longing. In Psalm 42, it states, “As the deer pants for streams of water.” So, my soul longs after You, O God. This paints a picture of someone needing God as much as they need water to live.
Putting God First
Jesus also tells us to “seek first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33). Simply put, this means putting God above everything else in your life—your worries, your plans, and your dreams. When we do that, the Bible promises that God will also take care of our needs.
How Can You Grow This Desire?
You don’t have to be a spiritual expert to start wanting more of God. Here are a few practical steps:
· Talk to God (Prayer): Prayer isn’t about fancy words. It’s just having a conversation with God—sharing your thoughts, worries, and hopes. The Bible encourages us to bring everything to God in prayer.
· Read and Reflect: Spend some time reading the Bible, even if it’s just a few verses a day. Think about what you read and how it applies to your life. Psalm 1 says those who delight in God’s Word are blessed.
· Worship: Singing or listening to songs about God helps us connect with Him. Simply telling God how great He is also helps us connect with Him. Jesus said real worship comes from the heart and is guided by truth.
· Live It Out: Wanting God means trying to do what pleases Him. That means being honest, kind, forgiving, or making good choices. In John 14:15, Jesus says, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”
· Find Community: Being around others who want to grow closer to God makes a huge difference. Encouragement from friends, church, or small groups can help you stay on track, especially when things get tough.
Dealing with Difficulties
Let’s be honest—sometimes our desire for God fades. We face distractions, tough times, or just feel dry spiritually. The Bible warns that worries and chasing after “stuff” can make us lose focus (Matthew 13:22). When that happens, don’t give up! James 1:12 tells us that those who hang in there and keep their faith will be rewarded. The key is not perfection, but persistence—just keep seeking God, even when it’s hard.
Help from the Holy Spirit
The good news is, you’re not alone in this journey. God gives believers the Holy Spirit to help us. The Spirit understands our weaknesses and prays for us when we don’t know what to say (Romans 8:26-27). The Spirit also gives us strength to live in ways that please God and helps our desire for Him grow.
In Conclusion
Cultivating a deep desire for God involves simple, daily choices. Talk to Him, listen to Him, and worship Him. Live for Him and connect with others who do the same. There will be challenges. With God’s help and perseverance, your desire for Him will keep growing. It will change your life from the inside out.
