Preparing Our Hearts, Not Just Our Ears, for God’s Word
Many people assume that just being present in church and listening to a sermon means they’ve truly “heard” God’s Word. But real hearing goes beyond just letting words pass through our ears—it means understanding, responding, and letting God’s truth sink into our hearts. The Bible shows us that God’s message doesn’t always change lives simply because it’s spoken. Time and again, prophets in the Old Testament warned Israel, but their messages fell on deaf ears. Jesus also explained this in the parable of the sower, where some seeds (God’s Word) never take root because the listeners aren’t truly open or ready.
What does it mean to “hear worthily”? To hear worthily is to approach listening with a sense of respect, honor, and integrity. It’s about responding in ways that reflect admirable qualities—acting fairly, thoughtfully, and with genuine openness.
