Reclaiming the True Purpose of the Church
In today’s world, it often appears that being part of the body of Christ has become more about us—our preferences, comfort, and fleshly desires—than about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the gospel, and the kingdom of God. This subtle shift can be seen in how we approach church, worship, and even our service to others. Instead of centering our lives on the transformative power of God’s presence and the mission set before us, we sometimes prioritize personal fulfillment, social status, or the pursuit of blessings.
The Drift Toward Self-Centered Faith
Modern culture encourages us to seek what makes us feel good and what aligns with our desires. Unfortunately, this mindset can creep into our spiritual lives. Our prayers may focus mostly on what God can do for us. Our worship can become about the music style we prefer. Even our acts of service might be driven by how they make us look or feel, rather than by a genuine desire to serve as Jesus did.
God’s Original Design for the Body of Christ
The Church—the body of Christ—was never intended to revolve around individual wants. Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 12 that each member has a unique role, all connected and working together for a greater purpose: glorifying God and advancing His kingdom. Jesus called us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him (Matthew 16:24). The Holy Spirit empowers us not for self-gratification, but to be witnesses and ambassadors for Christ in the world.
Returning to the Heart of the Gospel
The gospel is the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ—His life, death, and resurrection—and the invitation for all to be reconciled to God. The kingdom of God is about His reign and rule, not ours. To truly be the body of Christ, we must reorient our focus from ourselves to Him. This means seeking God’s will above our own, pursuing holiness, and loving others sacrificially.
Practical Steps for Realignment
· Examine our motives: Are we seeking God, or just the benefits He provides?
· Center worship on Him: Let our songs, prayers, and gatherings be about honoring God, not entertaining ourselves.
· Embrace sacrificial service: Look for ways to serve others that may not bring recognition or comfort, but reflect Christ’s love.
· Proclaim the gospel: Share the message of Jesus boldly, making the kingdom of God our priority.
· Rely on the Holy Spirit: Invite the Spirit to lead, guide, and transform us daily.
Conclusion
Let us remember that being the body of Christ is not about us—it is about God’s glory, Jesus’s example, the Spirit’s work, the gospel’s power, and building His kingdom. When we shift our gaze back to Him, we find purpose, unity, and true fulfillment that no earthly desire can match.
