‘Only Believe’—Choosing Faith Over Fear (Mark 5:36)

Finding Hope and Strength in Jesus’ Simple Call to Faith

Life is full of moments that test our courage and shake our peace. Sometimes, the only thing we hear in the noise of fear and worry is a gentle whisper: “Only believe.” These two words, spoken by Jesus in Mark 5:36, hold incredible power and meaning for everyone who faces challenges, doubts, or hopeless situations. Let’s explore what Jesus meant, why He said it, and how His words can encourage us today.

The Story Behind the Words: Jairus, His Daughter, and Jesus’ Response

Mark 5 tells the story of Jairus, a respected leader in his community and a desperate father. Jairus’ little daughter was very sick—so sick that she was close to death. In his fear and heartbreak, Jairus came to Jesus, pleading for help. Jesus agreed to go with him, but as they made their way, news arrived: “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the teacher anymore?” (Mark 5:35)

Imagine the grief and fear that must have hit Jairus in that moment. But before he could give in to despair, Jesus turned to him and said, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” (Mark 5:36, NIV) Some translations put it even more simply: “Only believe.”

What Does “Only Believe” Mean? Faith vs. Fear

Jesus’ words to Jairus are more than just comforting advice—they’re a command to choose faith over fear. In our hardest moments, fear can shout louder than hope. But Jesus invites us to trust Him, even when circumstances seem impossible.

“Only believe” doesn’t mean ignoring our worries or pretending everything is fine. Instead, it means bringing our fears to God and choosing to trust in His power, love, and promises. Jesus was telling Jairus—and us—that faith is possible even when hope seems lost.

How Different Bibles Translate Mark 5:36

·      NIV (New International Version): “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

·      ESV (English Standard Version): “Do not fear, only believe.”

·      NKJV (New King James Version): “Do not be afraid; only believe.”

All these translations highlight the same message: Set aside fear and turn your heart toward trust in God.

Why This Matters for Us: Application to Modern Struggles

We all face situations that seem impossible—illness, loss, uncertainty, or overwhelming challenges. When life gets hard, fear is often our first reaction. Jesus’ words remind us that faith is not about having perfect circumstances; it’s about trusting God’s power and His promises, even when they seem far away.

“Only believe” means we don’t have to have all the answers. We just need to hold on to the One who does. God’s strength is enough to carry us through, and His love never fails, even when we can’t see the way forward.

Faith in Action: Letting Go of Fear, Holding On to Faith

How do we move from fear to faith? It starts with a simple step: turning to God with honesty about our worries. We can pray, “Lord, I’m scared, but I choose to trust You.” Faith is not the absence of fear—it’s moving forward in spite of it, believing that God is with us and for us.

Just as Jesus walked with Jairus through his darkest moment, He walks with us today. Our faith doesn’t have to be perfect or strong; it just needs to be placed in Him.

Encouragement for Today: Finding Hope and Comfort in God’s Sovereignty

If you’re facing a situation that feels hopeless, remember Jesus’ words: “Only believe.” God sees your pain, hears your prayers, and holds your future. Nothing is too difficult for Him. Even when the outcome is uncertain, we can trust that God is good, wise, and always at work for our good.

Let these words be a comfort and a challenge: Don’t let fear have the final say. Let faith rise in your heart, knowing that God is bigger than any storm you face.

Conclusion: Faith That Endures, Even When Hope Seems Lost

“Only believe.” These two words changed everything for Jairus—and they can change everything for us, too. When fear tries to take over, we can choose faith. When hope seems gone, we can hold on to God’s promises. Jesus’ invitation is clear and simple: Trust Me. He is always with us, and that is reason enough to believe—even when believing is hard.

May you find courage, hope, and peace as you choose faith over fear today.
