Observing the current headlines—wars erupting across the globe, cabinet members departing in waves, the president locked in a feud with the Pope, congressional gridlock preventing meaningful legislation, and several congresspersons embroiled in moral scandals—two truths come sharply into focus. First, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). Second, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne” (Psalm 89:14). These verses are not just religious platitudes; they are foundational principles for building a fair, just, and equitable society. Without them, fissures develop that threaten the stability and well-being of any nation.
The Danger of Calling a Nation “Christian” Without Understanding Its Foundations
It seems foolish to declare a nation “Christian” without grasping the core principles required to build a healthy and just society that pleases God. Christian identity is not merely a label; it is a commitment to the values reflected in God’s own character: righteousness, justice, loving devotion, and faithfulness. Psalm 89:14 and Hosea 4:6 reveal what should be present in any nation striving to reflect Christian values.
Righteousness and Justice: The Foundation of God’s Throne
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne” (Psalm 89:14). This phrase emphasizes the core attributes of God’s rule. In biblical context, righteousness refers to God’s moral perfection and His unwavering commitment to what is right. Justice signifies His fair and impartial treatment of all creation. The throne symbolizes God’s sovereign authority, and its foundation being righteousness and justice shows that His governance is based on these unchanging principles. This is echoed throughout scripture, such as Psalm 97:2: “Clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.” The consistency across these passages highlights the unchanging nature of God’s character. Prophetically, this foundation is fully realized in the reign of Jesus Christ, who embodies perfect righteousness and justice (Isaiah 9:7).
Loving Devotion and Faithfulness: Heralds of God’s Presence
“Loving devotion and faithfulness go before You.” Loving devotion, often translated as “steadfast love” or “mercy,” reflects God’s covenantal love and kindness toward His people. Exodus 34:6 echoes this: “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.” These qualities are perfectly manifested in Jesus Christ, described in John 1:14 as “full of grace and truth.”
