Why Righteousness, Justice, and Knowledge Are Essential for National Health
The Crisis in Headlines: A Nation in Turmoil
Observing the current headlines—wars erupting across the globe, cabinet members departing in waves, the president locked in a feud with the Pope, congressional gridlock preventing meaningful legislation, and several congresspersons embroiled in moral scandals—two truths come sharply into focus. First, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). Second, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne” (Psalm 89:14). These verses are not just religious platitudes; they are foundational principles for building a fair, just, and equitable society. Without them, fissures develop that threaten the stability and well-being of any nation.
The Danger of Calling a Nation “Christian” Without Understanding Its Foundations
It seems foolish to declare a nation “Christian” without grasping the core principles required to build a healthy and just society that pleases God. Christian identity is not merely a label; it is a commitment to the values reflected in God’s own character: righteousness, justice, loving devotion, and faithfulness. Psalm 89:14 and Hosea 4:6 reveal what should be present in any nation striving to reflect Christian values.
Righteousness and Justice: The Foundation of God’s Throne
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne” (Psalm 89:14). This phrase emphasizes the core attributes of God’s rule. In biblical context, righteousness refers to God’s moral perfection and His unwavering commitment to what is right. Justice signifies His fair and impartial treatment of all creation. The throne symbolizes God’s sovereign authority, and its foundation being righteousness and justice shows that His governance is based on these unchanging principles. This is echoed throughout scripture, such as Psalm 97:2: “Clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.” The consistency across these passages highlights the unchanging nature of God’s character. Prophetically, this foundation is fully realized in the reign of Jesus Christ, who embodies perfect righteousness and justice (Isaiah 9:7).
Loving Devotion and Faithfulness: Heralds of God’s Presence
“Loving devotion and faithfulness go before You.” Loving devotion, often translated as “steadfast love” or “mercy,” reflects God’s covenantal love and kindness toward His people. Faithfulness denotes His reliability and trustworthiness. These attributes “go before” God, suggesting they announce His arrival and prepare the way for His actions. In biblical culture, a king’s entourage preceded him, declaring his character. Similarly, God’s loving devotion and faithfulness are the forerunners of His presence. Exodus 34:6 echoes this: “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.” These qualities are perfectly manifested in Jesus Christ, described in John 1:14 as “full of grace and truth.”
The Peril of Ignorance: Hosea’s Warning
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” This phrase underscores the critical importance of knowledge, especially knowledge of God and His laws. Hosea addressed a people who had turned away from God, embracing idolatry and immorality. The “knowledge” here is not just intellectual; it is relational and covenantal, emphasizing deep understanding and relationship with God. This lack leads to spiritual and moral decay, resulting in destruction. Scripture often equates knowledge of God with wisdom and life (Proverbs 1:7; 9:10).
Hosea continues: “Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you as My priests.” The priests were responsible for teaching the law and guiding the people. Their failure resulted in God’s rejection, fulfilling the warnings of covenant curses. Forgetting God’s law leads to generational consequences (“I will also forget your children”), reflecting the communal impact of sin. Yet, hope remains in repentance and turning back to God, who is merciful and willing to restore (Joel 2:12-13).
Application: Principles for a Healthy and Just Society
· Commitment to Righteousness: Uphold moral integrity and ethical conduct in leadership and daily life.
· Practice Justice: Ensure fair treatment for all, regardless of status, wealth, or power.
· Cultivate Knowledge: Promote understanding of God’s principles and encourage wisdom at every level of society.
· Embrace Loving Devotion and Faithfulness: Foster steadfast love and reliability within communities and institutions.
Conclusion: Building a Nation God is Pleased With
A nation cannot claim to be “Christian” merely by name or tradition. It must be founded on the principles of righteousness, justice, knowledge, loving devotion, and faithfulness. Without these, division and moral decay are inevitable. As we witness headlines of conflict, leadership crises, and moral failures, let us remember that the foundation of a healthy and just society begins with the principles God Himself upholds. Only then can we hope for lasting peace, equity, and prosperity.
