Why Listening—and Acting—Is Essential for Every Believer
Introduction: The Importance of Responding to Danger Warnings
Have you ever ignored a warning—maybe about bad weather or a health risk—only to regret it later? We all know that hearing about danger isn’t enough. We must respond. This principle is just as true when it comes to spiritual threats. Pastor Charles R. Swindoll said, “When danger is announced, the right response is necessary, and we are each responsible.” That statement rings true for us all, especially as we consider the warnings found in the Bible.
Several years ago around 2010-2011, I read The Church Awakening An Urgent Call For Renewal by Charles Swindoll. The call seems more urgent today than it did sixteen years ago. In the book the author discusses the challenges, struggles, and priorities of the church in the twenty-first century. He reveals the problems inherent in the entertainment-based postmodern church and shows how a return to biblical teaching will restore its strength and impact. Now being replaced by a feel-good message instead of what Christians need to know to stand strong in a world that’s lost its way–Swindoll exposes the problems of–and solutions for–the postmodern evangelical church.
Post-modern evangelicalism, also referred to as “post-evangelicalism,” represents a significant shift from conventional evangelical beliefs by emphasizing personal experience, authentic community, and narrative over rigid doctrinal certainty and unwavering commitment to propositional truth. This movement emerged largely as a response to cultural tensions, moral failings, and uncompromising stances on biblical inerrancy within mainstream evangelical circles. Building on the transformative insights he shared in The Grace Awakening, the author now delivers a candid and practical guide for revitalizing churches, placing Christ at the center as Lord and Master. Inspiring and energizing, THE CHURCH AWAKENING promises to spark lasting change in how Christians approach church life for generations.
Understanding Paul’s Warning: ‘Difficult Times’ Explained
In 2 Timothy 3, Paul warns Timothy (and us) about what he calls “difficult times.” But what does he mean? Paul isn’t just talking about rough patches or everyday struggles. These are times marked by moral chaos, confusion, and spiritual danger. He describes a world where people love themselves more than God, chase after pleasure, and lose sight of what’s right. These aren’t just distant threats—they’re realities that can invade our churches, homes, and hearts.
Spiritual Threats: The Reality Behind the Danger
Paul’s warnings shine a light on challenges that churches face today: false teachings, hypocrisy, and people who seem “religious” but lack genuine faith. He lists characteristics of such individuals: they are lovers of themselves, greedy, boastful, abusive, disobedient, ungrateful, and unholy. They may even appear spiritual on the outside but deny God’s power in their lives. These spiritual threats aren’t always obvious, but their impact can be devastating if we don’t recognize and respond to them.
Responsibility to Respond: Why Action Matters
It’s easy to hear warnings and assume someone else will handle the danger. But Paul makes it clear that every believer has a personal responsibility. We can’t just sit back and hope things get better. Ignoring spiritual danger can leave us vulnerable. If we want to stay strong in our faith and protect our church community, we must respond by making wise choices and standing firm.
Paul’s Instructions: What to Do (2 Timothy 3:13–17)
So, what does decisive action look like? In 2 Timothy 3:13–17, Paul gives clear instructions. He tells us to continue in what we’ve learned from Scripture, to rely on God’s Word for wisdom and guidance, and to trust that God equips us for every good work. The Bible isn’t just a book—it’s our foundation and our shield against spiritual harm. When we stay rooted in God’s truth, we’re prepared to face whatever comes our way.
Avoiding Harmful Influences: Paul’s Admonition
Paul also says, “Stay away from people like that.” He isn’t being harsh; he’s protecting us from influences that can pull us away from God. The people he warns against are those who appear religious but are corrupt inside, always learning but never accepting the truth. They spread confusion and undermine faith. By choosing relationships wisely and avoiding spiritual pretenders, we safeguard our walk with Christ.
Faithful Endurance: Encouragement and God’s Rescue
Paul encourages us to keep going, even when it’s tough. He reminds us that faithful endurance is possible because God is with us. No matter how difficult the times, God promises to rescue those who trust Him. We don’t face spiritual danger alone; God equips and protects us as we stand firm. Our endurance, rooted in His Word and guided by His Spirit, is proof of our faith and God’s faithfulness.
Conclusion: A Call to Decisive, Discerning Action
Warnings aren’t meant to scare us—they’re meant to prepare us. The message from Pastor Swindoll and the apostle Paul is the same: hearing about danger is only the first step. Responding with action is our responsibility. Let’s be discerning, stay rooted in God’s Word, avoid harmful influences, and endure faithfully. When we do, we not only protect ourselves—we help our church, our families, and our communities stand strong in faith, no matter what challenges come our way.
