Encouragement for Believers to Grow in Faith and Understanding
Introduction: Revisiting ‘Lazy Minded Christians’ and Proverbs 13:4
Several years ago, I wrote about “lazy minded Christians,” inspired by Proverbs 13:4. My intention wasn’t to offend, but to encourage believers to dig deeper in their faith and understanding. I even find myself getting lazy at times and need to refocus my energies on things that matter, reminding myself to pursue spiritual growth with intention and purpose. In today’s world, it’s easy to fall into a routine of just attending church occasionally or reading the Bible now and then. But as Proverbs 13:4 reminds us, “The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” This verse is a wake-up call for all of us.
Spiritual Laziness: What It Looks Like Today
Spiritual laziness can sneak up on anyone. Maybe it’s settling for surface-level Christianity—showing up on Sundays, or skimming a few Bible verses when convenient. But faith is meant to be lived daily, not just checked off a list. When we neglect growing in our relationship with God, we open the door to spiritual ignorance. This makes us vulnerable to deception and distraction, especially in times when the church faces challenges like the rise of Christian nationalism and shifting cultural values.
Biblical Warnings and Encouragements
The Bible gives clear guidance on how to avoid spiritual complacency and embrace godly living. In 2 Peter 1:3, we’re reminded that God has given us everything we need for life and godliness. We’re also given precious promises, but it’s up to us to embrace them and let them transform us. In 2 Thessalonians 3:6-18, the Apostle Paul warns against idleness and urges believers to stay away from those who are disruptive and don’t follow biblical teaching. Hebrews 6:9-12 encourages us not to grow lazy in our walk, but to imitate those who inherit God’s promises through faith and patience. God wants each of us to show diligence right to the end, so our hope may be fully realized.
Practical Steps to Grow in Faith and Diligence
So, how can we move beyond spiritual laziness? Start by making time with God a priority—read the Bible regularly, pray sincerely, and seek to understand His will. Don’t just rely on what you receive at church; pursue personal growth by studying scripture, asking questions, and connecting with other believers. Practice moderation and patience, as the Bible teaches, and let your faith influence every area of your life. Remember, diligence in the Christian walk isn’t about perfection, but about steady progress and sincere effort.
Resisting Passivity and Serving Wholeheartedly
It’s easy to become passive, especially when life gets tough or the world feels uncertain. But as Joyce Meyers says, we must refuse to be lazy Christians and resist an apathetic attitude. God calls us to serve Him with our whole hearts, not to hide our faith or let our enthusiasm fade. The true test of spirituality often comes when we face injustice, disappointment, or turmoil. These moments are opportunities to press in, renew our minds with God’s Word, and let Him shape our character.
Conclusion: A Call to Action for Believers
As believers, we’re called to live out our faith with diligence and purpose. Let’s not settle for just “getting by” spiritually. Instead, let us strive to grow, encourage one another, and serve wholeheartedly. God has great plans for each of us, and He promises that those who diligently seek Him will be richly supplied. Today, let’s commit to resisting spiritual laziness and pursue a vibrant, wholehearted walk with God. The days may be challenging, but our hope is secure when our faith is active and growing.
