An Exploration of Faith and the Human Condition
Throughout history, faith has served as a guiding light for millions, encouraging believers to pursue lives of humility, love, and obedience to God. Yet, there have been moments where selfish desires have veered professing Christians away from these principles, leading them into spiritual darkness. This phenomenon, rooted in human nature, is not new—it has echoes in biblical history, societal trends, and prophetic warnings.
Echoes of the Past: The Children of Israel
The story of the children of Israel serves as a poignant example of how selfishness can lead believers astray. When Israel demanded a king to rule over them, they ignored God’s sovereignty and sought to conform to the ways of surrounding nations. This desire for control and human leadership ultimately led to spiritual and political upheaval. Similarly, some Christians today have prioritized worldly desires over divine guidance, seeking judgment or punishment for others rather than introspection and grace.
The Conservative Evangelical Right’s Struggles
In modern times, some within the conservative evangelical movement have been drawn away from the essence of their faith by selfish desires. Rather than centering their efforts on God’s commandments to love and serve others, the conservative right has at times prioritized agendas rooted in advocating for reduced government involvement and preserving traditional values. This approach has evolved further into a more populist and nationalist movement, with the aim of reshaping federal authority and establishing greater cultural influence. This shift mirrors the Israelites’ longing for power and validation, which led them into periods of turmoil and darkness.
Darkness Covering the Earth
This spiritual drift is compounded by the broader reality of darkness covering the face of the earth. Political upheaval, wars, and rumors of wars are constant reminders of a fractured world. In these last days, as forewarned in Scripture, many have become lovers of themselves rather than lovers of God. Selfishness, greed, and pride have opened the door to widespread deception, blinding individuals to the truth and corrupting the purity of faith.
The Nation Under God: What Should It Look Like?
A nation under God should reflect the character of the Creator—holy, just, righteous, and loving. Yet, selfishness has often distorted this vision. Instead of embodying God’s attributes, societies and individuals have pursued their own agendas, compromising the integrity of their faith. This deviation not only affects personal relationships with God but also undermines the collective spiritual fabric of communities.
Understanding the Character of God
To combat this spiritual drift, it is essential to return to the foundation—the character of God. The Bible reveals God as holy, just, and righteous, yet also compassionate, loving, and merciful. His justice is not rooted in punishment for its own sake but in restoring order and righteousness. His love is sacrificial, extending grace even to those who falter. By understanding and emulating these qualities, believers can navigate the temptations of selfishness and rediscover the true essence of their faith.
Lessons for Today
How, then, can professing Christians find their way back? It begins with introspection—acknowledging the ways in which selfishness may have clouded judgment and actions. It requires a recommitment to living out God’s commandments to love Him and love others. This involves:
· Humility: Letting go of pride and selfish ambition.
· Repentance: Turning away from behaviors and desires that contradict God’s will.
· Seeking Truth: Studying Scripture and praying for discernment.
· Community: Encouraging one another to remain steadfast in faith.
Conclusion
Selfishness has the power to lead astray even the most devout believers, but it is not the end of the story. By recognizing the danger of prioritizing personal desires over God’s will and returning to the principles of faith, professing Christians can reclaim their spiritual light. As darkness covers the earth, the call to reflect God’s holy, just, righteous, and loving nature becomes ever more urgent, reminding us that faith is not merely about belief but about the daily practice of humility, love, and obedience.
