Living Authentically as a Child of God

Understanding Identity, Purpose, and Spiritual Discernment

Who are you? This is a question that cuts deeper than what you do, your accomplishments, or your failures. Your identity lies not in your occupation, talents, or worldly status, but in your relationship with God. You are His child, uniquely created and deeply loved. This truth forms the foundation of your identity—a truth that transforms how you see yourself, others, and the world around you.

Your Identity as a Child of God

Your identity is rooted in being a child of God. This means that your value is inherent, given by the Creator. It is not something you earn or lose. God’s love for you is steadfast and unchanging. He loved you first, even before you were aware of Him. As Christians, we are called to reflect His image authentically. This reflection comes not from external appearances or actions alone but from a deep, abiding relationship with Him. True transformation begins when we allow His love to shape our hearts and minds.

Living for Him, Not for Self

To live as a child of God requires a pivotal shift—dying to yourself. This doesn’t mean losing your personality or individuality but surrendering selfish ambition, pride, and sin. This process grows as you identify with the suffering of Christ. It’s not easy, and it demands sacrifice, but it leads to a life filled with purpose and authenticity. Another level of dying—of letting go of your desires—opens the door to deeper transformation, both within you and in the culture around you.

As carriers of God’s presence, Christians have the responsibility to reflect His love, mercy, and truth to the world. This prophetic lifestyle isn’t easy. It calls for courage, compassion, and wisdom. It’s about magnifying Christ—making Him known to others through your words, actions, and the way you live.

A Call to Holiness and Discernment

In a world filled with moral confusion, Christians are called to live with integrity and discernment. Jesus said we must be as shrewd as serpents and as harmless as doves. This means navigating the complexities of life with wisdom, without compromising righteousness.

The Dangers of Mixture

One of the greatest challenges is avoiding the mixture of righteousness and unrighteousness in our lives. When we allow sin or compromise to coexist with our faith, we open ourselves to deception. This is especially true when it comes to spiritual gifts and the anointing. The enemy studies our weaknesses, devising strategies to pull us down. You cannot straddle two worlds—the realm of the Spirit and the realm of the flesh—and expect to stand firm. Playing with the precious things of God, allowing sin to infiltrate your life, is like playing with fire. The consequences can be devastating.

Guarding Your Vulnerabilities

Every person has areas of vulnerability—places where the enemy seeks to exploit weaknesses. For those anointed by God, these vulnerabilities can become either the site of great spiritual victory or great spiritual downfall. Surrender your weaknesses to God. His power is perfected in your weakness, but only if you allow Him to take control. Be mindful of what you allow into your life, particularly through your eyes.

Guarding the Gate of Your Eyes

Your eyes are described in Scripture as the lamp of your body (Luke 11:34). What you choose to look at influences your soul. If your eyes are healthy—focused on holy and pure things—your whole body will be full of light. But if you allow darkness to enter through what you watch or consume, your body will be full of darkness. Lust, one of the primary destroyers of prophetic vision, is rooted in selfishness—the complete opposite of God’s selfless nature.

Make a covenant with your eyes, as Job did (Job 31:1), to protect what you see and ensure your vision remains clear. Isaiah warns us of becoming spiritually blind, where even those chosen as prophets and seers may falter (Isaiah 29:10). To walk in prophetic clarity, your eyes must be dedicated to God’s holy purposes.

Walking in Divine Purpose

God has given each of us unique gifts and a special calling. These gifts are irrevocable, but they come with responsibility. Misusing them or taking them lightly can lead to long-term consequences. When wisdom is not the guardian of the anointing, the results can be drastic. You cannot afford to play with the devil’s fire or allow the world’s values to infiltrate your life.

Emulating God’s Heart

To fulfill your calling, cultivate a heart of compassion—a heart that mirrors God’s love for humanity. Ambition and immorality have given the world reason to mock the Church, but by living authentically and walking in humility, you can restore faith in what it means to follow Christ. True transformation in our culture will come only when we live as carriers of His presence, reflecting His light in every aspect of our lives.

Prophetic Revelation and Offense

Prophetic revelation is powerful but sharp, like a knife. It cuts through falsehoods and exposes the truth. Often, God packages His gifts in ways that challenge human understanding. He offends the mind to reveal the heart. This is a test of humility, forcing us to confront our pride and preconceived notions.

The Battle Within and Without

Living a prophetic lifestyle means engaging in spiritual battles. The enemy will target your weaknesses and vulnerabilities, attempting to bring you down. But God’s power is greater. By surrendering your weaknesses to Him and walking in His wisdom, you can stand firm. The degree of your anger, ambition, or fear often reveals where you need to grow or let go.

Personal Reflection

Personally, I’ve come to realize how deeply intertwined the battle within and without is in my daily walk of faith. Living a prophetic lifestyle puts me face-to-face with spiritual struggles, especially when the enemy zeroes in on my insecurities and weaknesses. There are days when anger, ambition, or fear seem overwhelming, but these moments actually highlight areas where God wants to bring healing and growth. I’ve found that surrendering these vulnerabilities to God and trusting His wisdom allows me to stand firm, even when circumstances are challenging. It’s not about never feeling weak, but about discovering strength in letting go and letting God lead me forward with renewed purpose and peace.

Conclusion: Knowing Christ and Making Him Known

At the heart of it all is Jesus Christ—magnified and glorified. To live as a child of God is to know Him deeply and make Him known to others. It’s a life of surrender, transformation, and purpose. As you walk in His presence, guard your heart, and cultivate compassion, you become a vessel of His love and a light in a dark world. True identity and fulfillment are found not in what you do but in who you are in Him. Let this truth guide your steps and shape the world around you.
