Living in Faith and Unity with Christ

Let’s take a moment to reflect on what it means to truly live a life guided by faith in Jesus Christ. The idea of “the crucified life” might sound unfamiliar or even intense, but it is one of the most meaningful and transformative ways to live as a follower of Christ. At its core, the crucified life means letting go of our personal desires, ambitions, and worldly distractions to allow Christ to live and work through us.

What Does It Mean to Live a Crucified Life?

The Apostle Paul described this concept beautifully in Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” Living a crucified life is not about literally dying—it’s about setting aside our selfish priorities and living a life that reflects God’s love, grace, and purpose. It’s a daily commitment to let Christ guide us, shape us, and transform us.

Paul understood that following in Christ’s footsteps involves both joy and sacrifice. Christ’s journey on earth was one of suffering, love, death, and resurrection. By embracing the crucified life, we are called to follow Him on that path—not just the triumphs but also the hardships. This doesn’t mean we seek suffering, but rather that we trust God to use every situation, even challenging ones, to grow us in faith and bring us closer to Him.

Why Is This Important?

In today’s world, so much of life is about “me, me, me.” What do I want? How can I achieve my goals? How do I find success and happiness? But Jesus offers a radically different perspective. He didn’t come to earth, live a sinless life, and die on the cross just so we could pursue our own wishes. He came to redeem, reconcile, and restore humanity so that we could be one with Him.

Living the crucified life is about unity with Christ. Anything that disrupts that unity—whether it’s selfishness, pride, or attachment to worldly values—needs to be addressed and surrendered. As Paul wrote in Philippians 3:12, “I’m not there yet, nor have I become perfect; but I am charging on to gain anything and everything the Anointed One, Jesus, has in store for me.” It’s not about achieving perfection overnight; it’s about continually striving to grow closer to Christ, knowing He’s with us every step of the way.

Lessons from History

This isn’t a new idea. Throughout history, great men and women of faith have embraced the crucified life. Church fathers, reformers, and revivalists all pointed to this message in their teachings and writings. They understood that the Christian journey isn’t just about salvation—it’s about transformation. It’s about pressing forward, as Paul says in Philippians 3:14, “toward the only goal that counts, the prize of the high calling of God in Jesus the Anointed One.”

These spiritual leaders didn’t shy away from the difficulties of living a crucified life. They faced persecution, hardship, and sacrifice, yet they continued to press on, inspired by the example of Christ. Their lives remind us that the crucified life is challenging, but it’s worth it.

How Do We Live a Crucified Life Today?

So, how can we apply this to our own lives? Here are a few practical steps:

1. Prioritize Faith Over Personal Desires

Take time to reflect on what truly matters. Are there areas in your life where your own priorities are taking center stage instead of God’s? Living a crucified life means putting your faith first and trusting God’s plan, even when it’s not what you expected.

2. Deal Courageously with Distractions

As Paul explains, anything that comes between us and Christ must be dealt with, no matter the cost. Whether it’s unhealthy habits, toxic relationships, or materialism, we need to identify and remove those barriers to stay focused on our spiritual growth.

3. Trust in God’s Faithfulness

The crucified life isn’t about relying on your own strength. It’s about leaning on God. As Galatians 2:20 reminds us, “The life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Trust that God’s love and faithfulness will guide you through every challenge.

4. Speak the Truth in Love

Ephesians 4:15 encourages us to “speak the truth in love.” Living a crucified life includes building up others with kindness, honesty, and grace. Our words and actions should reflect Christ’s love and draw others closer to Him.

5. Give Thanks in All Circumstances

Gratitude is a cornerstone of the crucified life. As 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 reminds us, “Celebrate always, pray constantly, and give thanks to God no matter what circumstances you find yourself in.” Even in difficult times, a heart of gratitude helps us stay connected to God and recognize His blessings.

A Call to Return to Our Roots

As followers of Christ, we are called to embrace this way of living. It’s time for the Church to return to the roots of this message: “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). Our relationship with God isn’t just about what we gain—it’s about who we become in Him. It’s about growing in every way to reflect Christ, as Ephesians 4:15 states, and pressing toward the ultimate goal of spiritual maturity.

Conclusion

The crucified life isn’t easy, but it’s deeply fulfilling. It’s a life of purpose, love, and faith—a life that aligns with God’s greater plan. As we reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made for us, let us remember to live in a way that honors Him, not just in words but through our actions, choices, and commitment to follow Him wholeheartedly.

Today, let’s celebrate the life we’ve been given and the hope we have in Christ. Let’s commit to living the crucified life, trusting that God’s love and faithfulness will sustain us. Blessings to all as we take this journey together.
