Why Principles Matter in Politics and Faith

Politics can often feel messy and divisive, especially during a presidential campaign. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, but as people of faith, we are reminded to keep our focus on what God values. The way we treat one another, the words we speak, and the actions we justify have eternal implications.

Does the End Justify the Means?

Some believe that achieving a good outcome, like electing the “right” candidate, makes any method acceptable, even if those methods go against our moral values. But as Christians, we have to ask ourselves: does God approve of hatred, divisive language, or harmful actions, even if they lead to a desirable result? The answer is no. God cares about how we treat others along the way, not just the outcome.

Our Behavior Reflects Our Faith

The Bible teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves. When our actions—or those of the leaders we support—cause harm, confusion, or division, we are not acting in love. If our behavior leads others to stumble in their faith, or causes distress, we need to reconsider our approach. The Kingdom of God is about living a life of righteousness, peace, and joy through the Holy Spirit, and our actions should reflect those values.

What Truly Honors God?

Some may argue that certain actions or rhetoric are justified because they lead to a thriving and prosperous nation. But if prosperity only benefits a few while neglecting the needs of the poor, oppressed, or marginalized, God is not pleased. Justice, in God’s eyes, means doing what is right and caring for those in need—widows, orphans, the poor, and even foreigners among us.

Avoiding Judgment and Division

The apostle Paul reminds us in Romans that we should not judge others or treat them with contempt over differences. We all stand accountable to God, and it’s our responsibility to avoid being a stumbling block for others. This applies to the political candidates we support—our loyalty to a party or leader should never lead us to justify ungodly behavior or sow division.

What Can We Do?

Instead of getting swept up in divisive “rabble-rousing” or harsh rhetoric, we should focus on promoting peace, understanding, and mutual respect. Let’s strive to build each other up, rather than tearing each other down. When we align our actions with God’s principles, we not only honor Him but also create a better, more united community for everyone.

Final Thought

No political party or candidate is perfect, but our faith reminds us to prioritize love, justice, and righteousness above all else. Let’s remember that the Kingdom of God is about goodness and peace, and our actions—both in how we vote and how we treat one another—should reflect those truths.
