Exploring God’s steady truth and our need for humility
Some Bible phrases stop us in our tracks. Romans 3:4 is one of them: “Let God be true, but every man a liar.” At first, that may sound harsh. But Paul is not saying every person lies every moment of the day. He is showing us the difference between God’s perfect truth and human weakness. God is always right, always faithful, and always true—even when people misunderstand Him, doubt Him, reject Him, or disagree with Him.
What Does Romans 3:4 Mean?
In simple words, Romans 3:4 means this: if God says one thing and people say something different, God is the one we must believe. Human opinions change. Feelings change. Culture changes. Even sincere people can be wrong. But God’s Word does not bend to fit our preferences. His truth stands whether people accept it or not.
God’s Truth Is the Foundation
The heart of this verse is simple: God can be trusted completely. Titus 1:2 says God cannot lie. That means His promises are not shaky, His character is not uncertain, and His Word is not up for negotiation. In a world where people argue over truth, twist truth, or reject truth, believers have a steady place to stand: God is true.
This does not mean we always understand everything God does. It means that even when we do not understand, we can still trust Him. God sees the whole picture. We only see a small part. His wisdom is complete; ours is limited. His judgment is righteous; ours can be clouded by fear, pride, pain, or personal preference.
People Are Limited, but God Is Not
When Paul says “every man a liar,” he is reminding us that human beings are not the final authority. We can be mistaken. We can misjudge situations. We can believe something strongly and still be wrong. We can even try to make God’s Word fit what we want instead of letting God’s Word correct us.
That truth should humble us. It should make us careful about putting our opinions above Scripture. It should remind us to say, “Lord, if my thoughts disagree with Your Word, change my thoughts. If my feelings fight against Your truth, help me surrender.”
God Is Still Right When People Fail
Romans 3:4 also connects to Psalm 51:4, where David admits that God is right when He speaks and blameless when He judges. David had sinned, but he did not blame God, excuse himself, or argue with God’s standard. He agreed with God. That is real repentance.
This is important because people sometimes think their unbelief, disobedience, or confusion can cancel God’s faithfulness. But Paul makes it clear: human failure does not make God unfaithful. God will still keep His promises. God will still judge rightly. God will still be true, even when people are not.
Faith Means Letting God Have the Final Say
Faith is not just believing in God when His Word agrees with us. Faith is trusting God when His Word challenges us. It means letting God correct our thinking, our attitudes, our choices, and our motives. It means saying, “God, You are true, even when my feelings are loud. You are true, even when culture disagrees. You are true, even when I do not fully understand.”
No Room for Boasting
If God alone is perfectly true and righteous, then none of us has a reason to boast. We are not saved because we are smarter, better, or stronger than others. We are saved by the grace of God through Jesus Christ. Romans 3 reminds us that all people need God’s righteousness, not just their own best efforts.
How We Can Live This Out
- Measure every opinion by God’s Word. Do not let feelings, trends, or popular voices become your final authority.
- Stay humble. Remember that even sincere people can be wrong, but God never is.
- Trust God’s promises. Human unbelief does not cancel God’s faithfulness.
- Repent when God corrects you. Like David, agree with God instead of arguing with Him.
- Let truth shape your life. Build your choices, beliefs, and hope on what God has said.
In Summary
“Let God be true and every man a liar” means God’s truth must stand above every human opinion, excuse, argument, and feeling. People may misunderstand. People may disagree. People may fail. But God remains faithful, righteous, and true.
So when life gets confusing and voices around you are loud, come back to this truth: God cannot lie. His Word is sure. His promises stand. His judgments are right. Let God be true—and let His truth have the final say in your life.
