Most of us have made decisions that felt right at the time, only to look back later and wonder, “What was I thinking?” Sometimes the choice looked harmless. Sometimes it even looked wise. But over time, the results showed us that appearances can be misleading.
That is the warning behind Proverbs 14:12 and Proverbs 16:25: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” In simple words, the Bible is telling us that not every path that looks good is actually good. A choice can feel right, sound right, and even be accepted by other people, yet still lead us away from God, peace, wisdom, and life.
Why Something Can “Seem Right” but Still Be Wrong
Our minds and hearts are powerful, but they are not perfect. We can be influenced by emotions, pressure, fear, pride, pain, or what everyone else is doing. A path may seem right because it promises quick success, comfort, attention, money, pleasure, or control. But if that path pulls us away from God’s truth, it will eventually cost us more than it gives us.
Think of a road sign that points in the wrong direction. The road may be smooth, the view may be beautiful, and the trip may feel easy at first. But if the sign is wrong, you will still end up in the wrong place. In the same way, a decision may feel good in the beginning but lead to regret, broken relationships, spiritual dryness, or a hardened heart.
How This Shows Up in Everyday Life
This proverb is not just about big, dramatic sins. It also speaks to daily choices. It may seem right to hold a grudge because someone hurt you. It may seem right to cut corners because “everyone does it.” It may seem right to chase success at any cost. It may seem right to stay in an unhealthy relationship because you are afraid to be alone. It may seem right to ignore God’s voice because your own plan feels easier.
The problem is not that we should never think, plan, or use common sense. God gave us minds for a reason. The problem comes when we trust our own understanding more than we trust God. When our feelings become our compass, we can easily mistake comfort for peace, popularity for truth, and opportunity for God’s approval.
The Better Way: Seek God’s Wisdom
Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us the answer: trust in the Lord with all your heart, do not lean only on your own understanding, acknowledge Him in all your ways, and He will direct your path. In plain language, this means: do not make God your last option. Bring Him into the decision before you move forward.
Seeking God’s wisdom means praying honestly, reading Scripture, listening for conviction, and being willing to obey even when God’s way is not the easiest way. It also means asking trusted, spiritually mature people for counsel. Sometimes God protects us by sending wise voices to challenge what we want to do.
Jesus Is the True Way
The proverb warns us about paths that only seem right. Jesus shows us the path that truly is right. In John 14:6, Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” That means Christianity is not only about trying harder to make better choices. It is about following a Person who leads us back to the Father.
This is good news because all of us have taken wrong turns. We have trusted ourselves too much. We have ignored warnings. We have chosen what felt right instead of what was right. But God does not simply leave us lost. Through Jesus, He offers forgiveness, correction, and a new direction.
A Simple Guide for Making Better Choices
- Pray before you decide. Ask God to reveal what is wise, not just what is attractive.
- Check the choice against Scripture. God will not lead you in a direction that contradicts His Word.
- Look beyond the moment. Ask, “Where could this decision lead in six months, one year, or five years?”
- Watch your motives. Are you being led by faith, love, and obedience, or by pride, fear, anger, or selfish desire?
- Seek wise counsel. Talk to people who love God and are willing to tell you the truth.
- Pay attention to peace and conviction. God’s Spirit often warns us when something is not right, even if we want it badly.
A Question Worth Asking Before you take the next step, ask yourself: “Am I choosing this because it is God’s way, or because it simply seems right to me?” That one question can save us from many painful detours.
It helps us slow down, humble ourselves, and invite God into the places where we are tempted to rush ahead.
Final Thought
“There is a way that seems right” is not meant to scare us. It is meant to wake us up. God loves us too much to let us walk blindly down roads that lead to destruction. His Word calls us to pause, pray, listen, and follow the path that leads to life. The safest way is not always the easiest way, and the right way is not always the most popular way. But God’s way is always the best way.
Short Prayer
Lord, help me not to trust only what seems right to me. Give me wisdom, humility, and discernment. Lead me away from paths that look good but end in harm, and guide me in the way of truth, life, and peace through Jesus Christ. Amen.
