A Practical Guide to Embracing God’s Rule
The concept of the kingdom of God can feel abstract, especially if we live in democratic countries where kings and kingdoms aren’t part of our daily experience. But understanding it is vital to truly live as followers of Jesus. Let’s break it down in a way that’s easy to grasp.
What is the Kingdom of God?
At its heart, the kingdom of God is about God’s rule and reign. It’s wherever Jesus is king. If you’ve invited Jesus into your life and let Him guide your decisions and actions, the kingdom is living inside you. The Bible also teaches us that the kingdom exists in heaven, where God’s will is done perfectly, and it can be present on earth when we, as His followers, act according to His will. Every time God’s love and justice are carried out by His people, His kingdom comes closer to earth.
Why Did Jesus Talk About the Kingdom?
The kingdom of God was central to Jesus’ mission and message. He used stories (parables) to illustrate what the kingdom is like, showing us how God moves in the world and how we should live. Throughout the New Testament, the word “kingdom” is mentioned over 150 times, emphasizing its importance.
Jesus didn’t just talk about the kingdom—He demonstrated it through miracles, teaching us that God’s power and presence are active and real. And when we pray, “Thy kingdom come,” we’re asking for God’s rule to grow, not only in our personal lives but in the broader world.
How Do We Live in the Kingdom?
Living in the kingdom of God isn’t just about attending church or checking off a list of religious duties. It’s about committing to spiritual growth and maturity. It requires loving God with everything we have—our emotions, decisions, thoughts, and physical actions. It’s also about developing three key aspects of ourselves:
· Knowing: Growing in knowledge and understanding of God’s Word.
· Being: Building strong convictions and character that reflect Christ.
· Doing: Using skills to serve others and advance God’s purposes.
This path isn’t quick or easy. It takes time, intentional effort, discipline, and connecting with others in a community of faith. You grow not just through sermons but through worship, fellowship, service, learning, and sharing your faith with others.
A Call to Mature Faith
One of the challenges many churches face is spiritual immaturity. A person can attend church for decades but still miss out on becoming Christlike. That’s why moving from “come and see” to “come and die” in the footsteps of Jesus is crucial. It’s about embracing a life of purpose and mission for God’s glory.
To live a kingdom life, we need to balance five key experiences:
· Worship: Praising God for who He is.
· Fellowship: Building relationships with others in faith.
· Discipleship: Learning and growing in Christ.
· Service: Helping others in need.
· Evangelism: Sharing the good news of Jesus with the world.

The kingdom of God isn’t a place you enter; it’s a way of life under Jesus’ leadership. Every time you choose love, justice, and faithfulness, you are living in the kingdom. It’s about letting Jesus reign in your heart and participating in His work on earth.
