Simple Wisdom from 1 Thessalonians 5:20–21 and Proverbs 30:5–6

Sometimes, the Bible can sound complicated, but its messages are meant to guide us in real, everyday situations. Let’s look at two important passages: “Do not despise prophesies, but test everything; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:20–21) and “Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar” (Proverbs 30:5–6). What do these mean for us?

Don’t Ignore Prophecy—But Be Wise

The first passage tells us not to look down on prophecies. In simple terms, that means we shouldn’t automatically dismiss messages or insights that people say come from God. Instead, we should pay attention, listen, and consider them carefully.

However, we’re also told to “test everything.” This means we shouldn’t blindly accept everything we hear. We need to think for ourselves, ask questions, and see if what’s being said matches up with what we know about God’s character and teachings. If something passes the test—if it’s good, true, and helpful—then we should hold onto it.

God’s Words Are Reliable

The second passage from Proverbs reminds us that God’s words are trustworthy. Whatever God says is solid and dependable. If we rely on Him, He protects us, like a shield. This gives us confidence and comfort in uncertain times.

But there’s also a warning: Don’t change or add to God’s words. If we twist His message or try to make it say something it doesn’t, we could end up in trouble. It’s important to respect what the Bible says and not put our own spin on it.

Putting It All Together

So, in everyday life, these verses encourage us to stay open to God speaking to us—whether through others, through scripture, or through our own experiences. But they also remind us to be careful and thoughtful, checking that what we hear is truly from God and lines up with His reliable words. If it does, we can trust it and let it guide us. If it doesn’t, it’s okay to let it go.

In short: Stay open, but stay wise. Trust God’s truth, and let it be your shield.
