How to Experience God’s Presence and Overcome Spiritual Hindrances

Have you ever tried to get close to God but felt like something kept getting in the way? Maybe you prayed, but your mind wandered. Maybe you opened your Bible, but nothing seemed to sink in. Maybe you wanted to feel God near, but instead you felt dry, tired, or distracted. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone.

The journey into God’s presence is beautiful, but it is not always easy. There are real struggles along the way. Still, those struggles do not mean you are failing. Many times, they are signs that God is doing deep work in your heart. What is valuable often takes effort, and knowing God more deeply is worth every step.

Listen Closely So You Don’t Drift

Hebrews 2:1 says, “We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” That is a simple but serious warning. Drifting usually does not happen all at once. It happens slowly. A person can miss prayer one day, ignore God’s voice another day, get caught up in life, and before long feel far from Him.”

Think of a small boat on the water. If it is not anchored, the current can carry it away without much noise or warning. Our hearts can be like that. That is why listening to God matters. We listen through Scripture, prayer, worship, quiet reflection, and obedience. We lean in because God’s voice is too important to treat casually.

The Biggest Battle Is Often Inside Us

One of the greatest hindrances to experiencing God’s presence is not always what is happening around us. Sometimes it is what is happening within us. The old nature, or the part of us that still wants its own way, can resist God’s work. It shows up as pride, selfishness, doubt, stubbornness, fear, or habits we know are pulling us away from Him.

This does not mean we should live in shame. It means we should be honest. God cannot heal what we keep hiding from Him. When we admit, “Lord, this is in me, and I need Your help,” we open the door for His grace to work. The struggle inside us becomes a place where God can bring real change.

Common Hindrances on the Journey

  • Doubt: We wonder if God hears us, cares about us, or is really near.
  • Distraction: Life gets loud. Phones, work, worries, entertainment, and responsibilities can crowd out quiet time with God.
  • Worldly desires: Success, comfort, money, approval, and pleasure can become more important to us than God.
  • Unconfessed sin: Sin does not make God stop loving us, but it can make our hearts less sensitive to Him.
  • Impatience: We want quick results, but spiritual growth often happens little by little.

These hindrances are common, but they are not stronger than God. Every believer faces battles. The key is not pretending they are not there. The key is bringing them to God and letting Him teach us how to overcome them.

We Overcome by God’s Power, Not Our Own

Many people think the answer is simply to try harder. But the Christian life is not just about human effort. Yes, we have a part to play, but lasting change comes from God’s power working in us. We pray because we need Him. We read Scripture because His truth renews our minds. We worship because it turns our attention back to Him. We stay connected to other believers because encouragement helps us keep going.

Overcoming does not mean you never struggle again. It means you keep returning to God. You keep choosing Him when your feelings are weak. You keep listening when life is noisy. You keep surrendering when your old habits try to take over. Little by little, God strengthens you.

Why the Struggle Makes the Journey More Precious

We often wish the path were easier. But the struggle teaches us things comfort never could. It teaches patience when answers take time. It teaches humility when we realize we cannot do it alone. It teaches trust when we must believe God even before we feel anything. It teaches love when we choose God not just for what He gives, but for who He is.

Think about anything meaningful in life. A strong marriage, a healed relationship, a useful skill, or a healthy body all require effort. The work does not make the goal less valuable. It makes the goal more precious. In the same way, the effort involved in seeking God deepens our appreciation for His presence.

The Reward Is Transformation

The greatest reward is not just a spiritual feeling. Feelings can come and go. The true reward is transformation. God changes our hearts. He heals what is broken. He softens what has become hard. He gives peace where there was fear, strength where there was weakness, and hope where there was discouragement.

As we continue to seek Him, fellowship with God becomes more real. We begin to recognize His hand in ordinary moments. We become more aware of His guidance. We grow more steady in storms. We do not just talk about faith; we begin to live it.

Keep Going

If you are facing hindrances today, do not give up. The struggle is not the end of your story. It may be the very place where God is preparing you for deeper fellowship with Him. Keep listening. Keep praying. Keep turning back to Him. Keep trusting that He is near, even when the path feels hard.

Experiencing God’s presence is worth the journey because God Himself is worth it. The obstacles may be real, but His grace is greater. The road may be difficult, but the reward is deeper life, stronger faith, and a closer walk with the One who loves you most.
