A Soul That Longs for God

Reflections on the Eagle’s Yearning and the Bridge to Divine Intimacy

Have you ever felt like something is missing, even when life looks fine on the outside? Many people carry a quiet hunger in their hearts—a deep desire for peace, purpose, and closeness with God. The Bible often describes this as thirst, hunger, or longing. That longing is not a weakness. It is a sign that we were made for more than just getting through the day. We were made to know God.

Like an Eagle Made to Soar

Think about an eagle. It was created to fly high, catch the wind, and rise above the earth. If an eagle could not fly, something would feel deeply wrong. In a similar way, our souls were made for God. Deep inside, we know we were meant for more than routines, stress, and distractions. We were made to live close to the One who created us. That is why so many people feel restless. Our hearts want to soar, but we often feel stuck on the ground.

Why It Can Feel Hard to Get Close to God

Even when we want to know God, the journey can feel frustrating. We pray, but sometimes we feel nothing. We read Scripture, but our minds wander. We want to trust God, but fear, shame, guilt, and doubt get in the way. Sometimes life is so noisy that we do not know how to slow down and listen. Other times we feel unworthy, as if we have failed too many times to come near to Him. These struggles are real, and many believers carry them quietly.

The Real Problem Beneath the Struggle

At the deepest level, the problem is not just distraction or lack of effort. It is sin. We all fall short of God’s goodness. We all carry things we regret—wrong choices, selfish motives, harsh words, hidden pride. No matter how hard we try, we cannot fix our hearts by ourselves. It is like owing a debt we cannot repay. We may try to be better people, but good deeds alone cannot remove the barrier between a holy God and broken people like us.

Why We Need More Than Good Intentions

Imagine someone guilty of a serious crime wanting to walk into a queen’s palace. Wanting to go in is not enough. Being sorry is not enough. What that person needs is a pardon. In the same way, if we want real closeness with God, we need forgiveness and restoration. We need someone to deal with our guilt and make a way for us to come near without fear. That is something we cannot do for ourselves.

Jesus Is the Bridge

This is the heart of the Christian message: Jesus came to make a way for us to be brought back to God. He did not only teach truth; He gave Himself for us. Through His death and resurrection, He paid the debt of sin and opened the door to new life. Because of Jesus, we can come to God not as strangers trying to earn a place, but as people welcomed by grace. He is the bridge between our need and God’s mercy, between our longing and God’s loving presence.

Keep Reaching for Him

If your soul longs for God, that longing is not pointless. It is an invitation. Yes, there will be days when prayer feels hard and faith feels weak. But do not give up. God has not turned away from those who seek Him. In Christ, the way is open. You can come honestly, humbly, and expectantly. Keep praying. Keep reading His Word. Keep bringing your heart to Him. The God you long for is not far away. Through Jesus, He has come near.
