When Jesus taught us to pray, He said, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). That simple prayer shows us God’s heart. He does not want heaven to feel far away from daily life. He wants His ways, His love, His truth, and His righteousness to be seen here on earth.
Many people think Christianity is mostly about going to church, singing songs, and trying to be a good person. Those things can be part of our faith, but Jesus had a bigger vision. He came announcing the Kingdom of God. That means God’s rule, God’s order, and God’s way of life breaking into the world through people who belong to Him.
Jesus Is Building More Than a Building
In Matthew 16:18, Jesus said, “On this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” When we hear the word church, we often think of a building, a Sunday service, or a place people attend. But Jesus was talking about something much bigger than a building.
The word often translated as “church” is the word Ekklesia. In simple terms, it means a called-out people. In Jesus’ day, the word could describe a group of people gathered to make decisions for a city. So when Jesus used this word, He was showing that His followers were not meant to be passive spectators. They were called to represent His Kingdom in the world.
The Rock Is Christ
Before Jesus spoke about building His church, Peter confessed that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” That confession matters. The foundation of the church is not human strength, human wisdom, or human personality. The foundation is Jesus Himself.
If Jesus is not the foundation, then whatever we build will not last. Programs may help. Buildings may serve a purpose. Leaders may encourage people. But Christ is the Rock. He is the One the church stands on. He is the One who holds His people together.
God’s Kingdom Is Not Just Religion
When Jesus began His ministry, He said, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). He did not simply say, “Start a religion.” He announced a Kingdom. A kingdom has a King, a way of life, values, authority, and purpose.
God’s Kingdom is seen wherever people submit to Jesus as King. It is seen when truth replaces lies, forgiveness replaces bitterness, generosity replaces greed, and love replaces selfishness. It is seen when families, workplaces, communities, and churches begin to reflect the heart of God.
What Does “On Earth As It Is in Heaven” Mean?
In heaven, God’s will is done perfectly. There is no rebellion against Him, no injustice, no hatred, no confusion, and no darkness. When we pray, “on earth as it is in heaven,” we are asking God to make earth look more like heaven.
This begins in our own hearts. Before we can bring heaven’s influence into the world, we must allow Jesus to rule in us. His will must shape our thoughts, words, choices, relationships, and priorities. Kingdom influence starts with surrender.
The Ekklesia Is Called to Influence
Jesus’ people are called to do more than gather. We are called to carry His light into the world. That does not mean we force people to believe. It means we live in such a way that people can see the goodness, wisdom, and love of God through us.
We influence the world when we pray, serve, forgive, speak truth, care for the hurting, raise our families in faith, work with honesty, and stand for what is right. These may seem like small things, but they matter. Heaven touches earth through ordinary people who obey God in everyday life.
Binding and Loosing in Simple Terms
Jesus also spoke about “binding and loosing.” These words can sound confusing, but in simple terms they have to do with agreeing with heaven. God’s people are called to recognize what God allows and what God forbids. We do not create truth; we agree with God’s truth.
Only God can forgive sins. Only God has final authority. But His people are called to speak His Word faithfully, live by His ways, and stand in agreement with His will. When the church is aligned with Jesus, it becomes a clear witness of heaven’s values on earth.
Building What Jesus Is Building
It is easy to build things Jesus never asked us to build. We can build our own platforms, preferences, traditions, and plans. But Jesus said, “I will build My church.” Our job is to line up with what He is building.
What is He building? He is building a people who know Him, love Him, obey Him, and represent Him. He is building a people who carry His presence into dark places. He is building a people who seek first the Kingdom of God and trust Him with the results.
Practical Ways to Live This Out
- Pray for God’s will to be done in your home, church, workplace, and community.
- Ask Jesus to rule your own heart before asking Him to change others.
- Speak truth with love instead of fear or pride.
- Serve people in practical ways that show the heart of God.
- Choose forgiveness, humility, and obedience in daily life.
- See church gatherings as preparation for Kingdom living, not the finish line.
A Hopeful Future
The future is not hopeless for the people of God. Jesus promised that the gates of Hades would not prevail against His church. That means darkness will not have the final word. The enemy cannot stop what Jesus is building.
When believers understand who they are in Christ, they stop living like spectators. They begin to live as representatives of the King. They bring hope where there is despair, peace where there is conflict, and light where there is darkness.
Conclusion: Let Heaven Be Seen Through Us
“On earth as it is in heaven” is not just a line in a prayer. It is a way of life. Jesus is building a people who carry His Kingdom into the world. We are called to live under His rule and show His heart in ordinary places.
