When Love Grows Cold
In Matthew 24, Jesus speaks honestly about hard times. He says that as sin and lawlessness increase, many people’s love will grow cold. In simple terms, when the world becomes more cruel, selfish, and confused, it can wear people down. Hearts can become numb. People stop caring for God, and they stop caring for one another the way they should. But Jesus does not say this to make us afraid. He says it to help us stay awake, faithful, and full of hope.
What It Means to Endure
Then Jesus gives a powerful promise: “the one who endures to the end will be saved.” This means the person who keeps trusting God, even through trouble, will not be abandoned. Endurance does not mean being perfect. It means staying with Jesus. It means continuing to believe, pray, obey, and hold on when life feels heavy. Real faith keeps going, not because we are strong on our own, but because God gives strength to those who lean on Him.
The Gospel Will Keep Reaching the World
Jesus also says that the gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. That is a message of hope. It means God’s plan is still moving forward. Darkness does not get the final word. The good news about Jesus will keep spreading. Even in troubled times, God is still calling people to Himself. His truth is not stopped by fear, conflict, or confusion.
Why Jesus Leaving the Temple Matters
This teaching begins as Jesus leaves the temple. That moment matters. The temple was the center of worship for the Jewish people, and its buildings were beautiful and impressive. The disciples pointed them out to Jesus because, like anyone else, they could see how grand they were. But Jesus wanted them to understand something deeper: even the most impressive things in this world do not last forever. Buildings fall. Systems change. Human glory fades. Only God’s kingdom stands forever.
Worldly Glory Does Not Last
Jesus foretold the destruction of the temple, which later happened in Jerusalem. That warning reminds us not to put too much trust in what looks strong on the outside. The most beautiful things in this world can pass away. Wealth, success, status, and even great buildings will not last forever. A wise person learns to “see through” these things and remember what truly matters. Our hope is not in what we can build or admire here on earth. Our hope is in Christ.
Jesus Was Preparing His Followers
From the Mount of Olives, Jesus explained the order of coming events. Some of His words pointed to the troubles the Jewish people would soon face, including the fall of Jerusalem. Other parts reach further ahead to the spread of the gospel and the final fulfillment of God’s plan. In other words, Jesus was helping His followers understand both what was near and what was still to come. He was preparing them not just with information, but with wisdom for how to live.
A Simple Takeaway for Us Today
For us today, the message is simple and timely: do not let your love grow cold. In a world filled with anger, dishonesty, and confusion, keep loving God and keep loving people. Stay faithful when others drift. Stay kind when others become harsh. Stay rooted in truth when others are led astray. Jesus never promised an easy road, but He did promise that the gospel would continue, that endurance matters, and that God’s saving work will stand to the very end. That gives us every reason to live with courage, peace, and hope.
