A Christian devotional on Lamentations 3, Deuteronomy 7:9, and how believers can trust God’s faithfulness in every season of life
Life moves through many seasons. Some are full of joy, clarity, and answered prayer. Others bring grief, uncertainty, disappointment, or long waiting. What makes these changes hard is not only what happens around us, but how deeply they test the heart. Yet one truth stands steady through them all: God is faithful. Lamentations 3 says, “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed… great is thy faithfulness.” These words were spoken in the middle of sorrow, not in a moment of ease. That is what makes them so powerful. God’s faithfulness is not limited to bright seasons; it is often seen most clearly in the dark ones.
Deuteronomy 7:9 calls the Lord “the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy.” His faithfulness is not fragile or occasional. It is part of His very nature. He does not change with circumstances, forget His promises, or grow weary in His care for His people. Human faithfulness can be inconsistent, but God’s never is. This means that whether our season is marked by abundance or lack, peace or pressure, celebration or sorrow, the character of God remains the same. He can be trusted not because life is easy, but because He is steadfast.
Psalm 100:5 says, “For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.” Faithfulness, then, is not only something we cling to in hard times. It is also something we praise in seasons of blessing. In joy, we remember that every good gift comes from His hand. In trial, we remember that His goodness has not changed. The believer learns to trace the faithfulness of God not only in dramatic answers, but in daily mercies, quiet provisions, undeserved strength, and grace that arrives morning after morning.
How do we hold on to this truth in daily life? We remember. We rehearse what God has done in Scripture and in our own lives. We thank Him for mercies we might otherwise overlook. We speak His promises back to our hearts when fear tries to rewrite the story. We also learn to look for His faithfulness in small places: in the grace to endure one more day, in comfort that comes quietly, in provision that arrives at the needed time, in a peace that steadies us when circumstances do not. These are not small things. They are often the very footprints of a faithful God.
If you are in a difficult season now, do not assume that God’s faithfulness has weakened because your path has become hard. The Lord is no less faithful in sorrow than He is in joy. He is no less faithful in delay than He is in immediate answer. Often, it is only later that we begin to see how carefully He carried us through what once felt uncertain. But even before we see it, we can rest in this: the God who has kept His people through every generation will not fail to keep you.
So whatever season you are in today, lift your eyes to the faithfulness of God. Let His unchanging character steady your heart more than changing circumstances unsettle it. Thank Him in the bright places, trust Him in the dark ones, and remember that His mercies are new every morning. The years may change, but the God who walks with you through them does not.
As I reflect on this, I can see how much of my own peace has come from looking back and noticing the steady faithfulness of God. There have been seasons I did not understand while I was in them, moments when the path felt uncertain and my heart felt weak. Yet over time, I have seen that the Lord never failed to carry me, provide for me, and remain near. Remembering that gives me courage for the season I am in now, because the God who was faithful then will be faithful still.
