When Religion Fuels Hate: A Biblical Warning for America Today

In the Bible, being called “unlearned” did not always mean someone was foolish or useless. Sometimes it simply meant they were ordinary people without formal religious training. That is what happened with Peter and John in Acts 4:13. The religious leaders were shocked by their boldness because they were not highly educated men, but they could tell one important thing: they had been with Jesus.

That should encourage us. God can use everyday people in powerful ways when they walk closely with Him. You do not need a title, a big platform, or a long list of degrees for God to give you wisdom, courage, and truth. What matters most is whether your life shows that you have truly been with Jesus.

But the Bible also gives us a warning. In 2 Peter 3:16, Peter says that unlearned and unstable people can twist Scripture to fit their own ideas. That kind of ignorance is not about lacking a college degree. It is about lacking humility, truth, love, and spiritual grounding. When people use the Bible carelessly, selfishly, or dishonestly, they can lead themselves and others into harm.

We see this danger today when religion gets mixed with fear, anger, and political loyalty. Faith can be twisted until fear sounds faithful, pride sounds righteous, and hatred sounds holy. People can become more committed to defending a party, a leader, or an ideology than defending compassion, justice, honesty, mercy, and human dignity.

Will it take an act of God for America to be healed from the hateful ideas tearing people apart? In one sense, yes. We need God to wake up hearts, expose lies, and lead people to repentance. But that does not mean we sit back and do nothing. God often works through ordinary people who are willing to stand for truth with humility and love.

If we want healing, we must stop using faith as a weapon and start living it as a witness. We must reject hatred, refuse foolish arguments, protect human dignity, and choose truth over tribal loyalty. Real faith is not proven by sounding religious. It is shown through humility, mercy, honesty, love, and a life that makes others recognize we have been with Jesus.
