Sometimes we talk a lot about church, blessings, success, problems, politics, family, purpose, and even spiritual gifts. But if we are honest, we do not always talk enough about Jesus Christ Himself. We do not talk enough about His suffering. We do not preach enough about what He carried for us. We do not pause long enough to remember what happened at the cross and what it means for our souls.
The message of Christianity is not simply, “Try harder,” “Be a better person,” or “God wants you to be happy.” The heart of the Christian faith is this: Jesus Christ came, suffered, died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. That is the good news. That is the foundation. That is the message we must never move away from.
We Can Talk Around Jesus Without Talking About Jesus
It is possible to talk about religion and still leave Jesus out. It is possible to talk about church attendance, good behavior, and moral living while saying very little about the Savior who bled and died for sinners. We can talk about miracles and motivation, but forget the Man of sorrows. We can talk about victory, but forget the suffering that purchased it.
But without Jesus, there is no gospel. Without the cross, there is no forgiveness. Without His blood, there is no cleansing. Without His resurrection, there is no living hope.
Jesus Suffered on Our Behalf
Jesus did not suffer because He had done wrong. He suffered because we had. He was innocent, yet He was treated like the guilty. He was holy, yet He stood in the place of sinners. He was mocked, beaten, rejected, and nailed to a cross, not for His own sins, but for ours.
That means the cross was not an accident. It was not just a sad ending to a good man’s life. It was God’s plan of rescue. Jesus took upon Himself the punishment, shame, and weight of sin so that we could be forgiven and brought back to God.
The Cross Shows Us the Seriousness of Sin
Many people today want to make sin sound small. We call it a mistake, a weakness, a bad habit, or a personal choice. But the cross shows us that sin is serious. If sin were small, Jesus would not have had to die. If people could save themselves, the Son of God would not have gone to Calvary.
The cross tells the truth about us and the truth about God. It shows us that we are more sinful than we like to admit, but also more loved than we can fully understand. God did not ignore sin. He dealt with it through Jesus.
“It Is Finished” Means the Work Is Complete
When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He was not saying, “I am defeated.” He was declaring that the work of salvation was complete. The debt of sin had been paid. The sacrifice had been offered. The way back to God had been opened.
This is why we must be careful not to add to what Jesus has already finished. We do not earn salvation by being religious enough, strong enough, good enough, or impressive enough. We receive salvation by faith in Christ. Good works matter, but they are the fruit of salvation, not the price of it.
We Need Cross-Centered Preaching Again
The church does not need less Jesus. The world does not need less Jesus. Hurting people, guilty people, tired people, proud people, broken people, and lost people all need to hear about Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
We need preaching that reminds us that Jesus is more than a helper for our plans. He is the Savior of our souls. We need songs that lift up His name. We need testimonies that point back to His grace. We need conversations that are not ashamed to say, “Jesus died for me, and His finished work is my only hope.”
Do Not Forget What He Finished
When life gets hard, remember the cross. When guilt rises up, remember the cross. When you feel unworthy, remember the cross. When you are tempted to boast in yourself, remember the cross. Everything we have with God comes through Jesus and what He finished for us.
The Christian life is not built on our perfect performance. It is built on Christ’s finished work. That truth should humble us, comfort us, and cause us to worship Him more deeply.
A Simple Prayer
Lord Jesus, help us to talk about You more. Forgive us for making the message about everything except You. Thank You for suffering in our place and finishing the work of salvation on the cross. Bring our hearts back to Calvary, and help us live with gratitude, faith, and worship. Amen.
