There are moments in history when it feels like the ground beneath us is shaking. Nations argue. People divide over race, politics, money, power, and fear. Things that once seemed strong begin to crack. In moments like these, we are reminded that God sees deeper than we do.
Romans 11:33 says, “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” In simple terms, God understands what we cannot fully understand. He sees what is hidden. He knows what is broken. And He is still working, even when we cannot trace His hand.
Jesus warned His followers that trouble would increase in the world. In Matthew 24, He spoke about wars, rumors of wars, nation rising against nation, famines, and earthquakes. But before He talked about all those things, His first warning was, “Watch out that no one deceives you.” That matters. Trouble is serious, but deception is dangerous because it can make people call wrong right, and right wrong.
When Jesus said “nation will rise against nation,” we can think about countries fighting countries. But we should also think about people groups being stirred up against one another. Racial hatred, ethnic pride, political manipulation, and fear can divide people who were all made in the image of God. That kind of deception steals truth, dignity, identity, inheritance, and love.
America has long spoken of life, liberty, and equality. Those are noble ideals. But when any nation claims freedom while denying freedom to others, its foundation begins to crack. Psalm 11:3 asks, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” The answer is not panic. The answer is to return to God’s foundation.
God’s foundation is not built on lies, greed, war, domination, stolen wealth, or pride. God’s foundation is justice, righteousness, mercy, truth, and love. Isaiah 28:16 says God lays a sure foundation, a precious cornerstone. Everything built on pride will shake. Everything built on deception will shake. Everything built on oppression will shake. But what God builds will remain.
That is why race is not just a political issue. It is a spiritual issue. Racism has robbed people of dignity, family, land, labor, culture, opportunity, and identity. It has divided people God created to reflect His image. It has helped build human kingdoms that benefit some while crushing others. That is not a small thing in God’s eyes.
Satan has always tried to interfere with God’s plan of redemption. One way he does this is by teaching people to fear, hate, dominate, or devalue one another. But God’s plan is bigger than one race, one tribe, one political party, or one nation. Acts 17 teaches that God made all nations of humanity and placed them in their times and places so they would seek Him.
When hidden histories come to light—slavery, colonization, stolen wealth, broken treaties, racist systems, and denied rights—it can feel painful. It can even feel like judgment. But God exposes what is hidden so what is broken can be healed. Truth is not the enemy of healing. Truth is often the doorway to healing.
Haggai 2:7 says God will shake all nations. God knows how to shake what people worship. He can shake empires, systems, economies, thrones, and false beliefs. But His shaking is not meaningless. He shakes what is temporary so we can see what is eternal. He shakes what is unjust so we can long for His justice. He shakes what is false so we can desire what is true.
Deep down, people long for freedom, peace, justice, belonging, restoration, and the glory of God. Many do not yet know that God is the One their souls are reaching for. But the desire for what is right and whole points back to Him.
So what should the righteous do when foundations are crumbling? We examine ourselves. Second Corinthians 13:5 tells us to test ourselves and see whether we are in the faith. We lay down pride. We lay down hatred. We lay down political idols. We lay down racial superiority. We lay down the need to protect false history. We choose truth, love, justice, mercy, and the Kingdom of God.
We must not worship America, any political party, any leader, any race, or any kingdom of man. We can honor what is good while still telling the truth about what is broken. We can love our nation while admitting its ideals have not always been lived out equally. We can pray for healing while standing for justice.
Romans 11 also reminds us that salvation is by grace, not by human pride or human works. God glorifies His grace by changing rebellious hearts. He opens blind eyes. He wakes people from spiritual sleep. He brings mercy where judgment was deserved. That should make us humble, grateful, and full of praise.
In this hour, we should not be alarmed, but we should be awake. We should not be deceived, but discerning. We should not be hardened by truth, but humbled by it. God is revealing what has been hidden. He is shaking what can be shaken. He is calling His people back to the sure foundation.
The kingdoms of this world may rise and fall, but God’s Kingdom cannot be moved. Man-made systems may crumble, but Christ remains the cornerstone. History may reveal deep wounds, but God still heals. Nations may shake, but God still reigns.
And when we cannot trace His hand, we can trust His heart. His wisdom is deeper than our questions. His justice is stronger than our systems. His mercy is greater than our failures. His ways are past finding out, but His foundation is sure.
