The Veil of Deception

When we look around at the present state of disarray in America, many of us feel the weight of it. There is division, confusion, and weariness in the land. People are hurting, families are strained, communities are tense, and even the hearts of believers can feel unsettled. In times like these, God does not call us to panic. His Word reminds us, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). He lovingly calls us to draw close, listen carefully, and ask Him to help us see clearly.

A veil is something that covers or hides what is really there. Deception happens when something false is made to look true. The veil of deception can make it hard for people to recognize what is right, healthy, and godly. It can make confusion feel normal, division feel necessary, fear feel wise, and pride feel justified. But God is gentle and faithful. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12). He does not leave His people in darkness; He invites us into His light.

If deception is allowed to remain, it can shape the way we think, speak, and respond. Over time, a person can begin to hold tightly to something that is not true, even when God is trying to bring correction and peace. This is why we need the Lord’s help. We are not strong enough to sort through every voice, opinion, and message on our own. James 1:5 tells us that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God, and He will give it generously. We need His wisdom, His Word, and His Spirit to steady us.

That is why the Bible tells us in Ephesians 5:15, “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise.” In everyday words, God is saying, “Pay attention to how you are walking. Let Me guide your steps.” To walk circumspectly is not to live afraid; it is to live awake, prayerful, and surrendered. It is the loving wisdom of a Father who wants His children to walk safely in truth.

Confusion can divide people, but God gathers His people close. He calls us to be children of light. Ephesians 5:8 says, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” We are not called to be ruled by fear, anger, or suspicion. We are not called to answer every argument or carry every burden we see in the world. We are called to stay near to Jesus, pray before we react, test what we hear, guard our hearts, and let love remain greater than offense. As 1 John 4:1 says, “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God.”

To walk carefully means we slow down and ask, “Lord, is this true? Is this from You? Does this lead me toward peace, love, righteousness, and wisdom, or does it stir up fear, pride, anger, and division?” Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding. We do not have to open our hearts to every voice. We can pause, pray, and let “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,” guard our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

The veil of deception is lifted as we return to God’s Word, humble ourselves in prayer, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us. Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). God’s truth does not crush us; it frees us. His light does not shame us; it heals us. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” When His light shines, confusion begins to lose its power, our hearts become steady again, and we are reminded that God is still present, still speaking, and still able to lead His people.

So in these days, let us walk carefully, but not fearfully. Let us be wise, but also tenderhearted. Let us seek God’s truth above popular opinion, remembering that Jesus prayed, “Your word is truth” (John 17:17). Let us love people without being pulled into the spirit of division. May the Lord remove every veil that keeps us from seeing clearly, and may He fill our hearts with His peace, His wisdom, and His love.
