When the Mouth Says “Christian,” but the Heart Says Something Else

These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” — Isaiah 29:13

It is possible to know the right Christian words and still have a heart that is not close to God. A person can say “God bless you,” quote Bible verses, go to church, pray out loud, and still carry pride, bitterness, unforgiveness, cruelty, or judgment inside.

God is not fooled by religious talk. He is not impressed by how spiritual we sound, what title we have, or how good we look in front of people. God sees what is going on inside us. He sees how we treat people when no one is watching. He sees whether our love is real or just something we talk about.

Isaiah 29:13 is a strong reminder that God wants more than lip service. Lip service means saying the right things without meaning them. It is when our mouth says one thing, but our life says something different. Jesus repeated this same warning in Matthew 15:8–9 when He spoke to religious leaders who cared more about rules and appearances than having hearts that were truly surrendered to God.

True faith is not just something we claim. It is something that should change us. If we truly belong to God, our hearts should slowly begin to look more like His. We should become more loving, more forgiving, more humble, more patient, more merciful, and more compassionate.

None of us are perfect. Every one of us needs grace. We all struggle, stumble, and need God’s help. But there is a serious difference between struggling with sin and becoming comfortable with a hard heart. A struggling heart still wants God. A hardened heart makes excuses, blames others, and refuses to change.

God is not asking us to perform. He is asking us to surrender. He does not want fake holiness on the outside while anger, pride, and selfishness rule on the inside. He wants truth in the heart. He wants a faith that shows up in how we speak, forgive, serve, love, and treat people.

A Simple Heart Check

  • Do my words about God match the way I treat people?
  • Am I more concerned with looking spiritual than being honest before God?
  • Do I forgive others, or do I hold on to bitterness?
  • Do I show mercy, or do I judge people harshly?
  • Is my worship coming from love, or am I just going through the motions?

This message is not meant to make us point fingers at others. It is meant to make each of us look in the mirror. The question is not only, “Do I sound like a Christian?” The deeper question is, “Is my heart close to God?”

So let this be a reminder for all of us: do not just come near to God with your mouth. Come near with your heart. Let your words, your actions, your attitude, and your love line up with the God you say you serve.

Because God is not looking for empty religious words. He is looking for a surrendered heart.

Prayer

Lord, help me not to honor You only with my lips while my heart stays far from You. Search my heart. Remove pride, bitterness, unforgiveness, and anything that does not look like You. Teach me to love sincerely, forgive freely, and walk humbly before You. Let my life match the faith I speak. Amen.
