1 Corinthians 10:6 says, “Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did” (NIV).
In simple words, Paul is saying, “Learn from what happened before you.” He points back to the Israelites in the wilderness. God had brought them out of Egypt, provided for them, and guided them, but many of them still complained, chased after sinful desires, and turned to idols.
Their story was not written down just to give us history. It was written to warn us. If people who saw God’s power up close could still drift away, then we need to stay alert too.
The big lesson is this: be careful what you allow your heart to crave. Anything that pulls us away from God can become an idol. It may not be a golden calf like in the Old Testament. Today, it could be money, attention, relationships, comfort, success, pride, or even our own plans.
When we feed wrong desires, they grow stronger. That is why we should deal with them early instead of waiting until they control us. A small compromise can become a big problem if we keep making room for it.
Paul’s warning is serious, but it is also loving. God does not show us these examples to shame us. He shows them to protect us. He wants us to learn from the mistakes of others instead of having to suffer the same consequences ourselves.
Today’s reminder: Don’t trust your own strength too much. Stay close to God, listen to His Word, and pay attention when your heart starts wanting things that lead you away from Him. Others have fallen, and we can too—but God is faithful. When we cling to Him, He gives us strength, wisdom, and a way out of temptation.
