The Bible has a lot to say about people who leave their homeland and live as strangers in another country. In simple words, God tells His people not to mistreat them, ignore them, or make life harder for them. Instead, He calls us to treat them with kindness, fairness, and compassion.
Many migrants carry heavy stories. Some leave because of hunger, danger, war, poverty, or the hope of giving their children a better future. Being in a foreign land can be lonely and frightening. They may not know the language, the laws, the culture, or anyone who can help them. That is why Scripture reminds us to remember their humanity before anything else.
God told Israel, “Do not mistreat the foreigner,” because they themselves once knew what it felt like to live as foreigners in Egypt. That message still speaks today: when we see migrants, we should not first ask, “How are they different from us?” We should ask, “How would I want to be treated if I were in their place?”
Treating migrants with dignity does not mean every issue is simple or that every nation will have the same laws. But for people of faith, the heart of the matter is clear: no person should be hated, abused, cheated, mocked, or denied basic justice because they come from somewhere else. Every human being is made in the image of God.
Jesus also made hospitality part of faithful living. He said, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” That means welcoming the vulnerable is not just a social issue; it is a spiritual issue. When we feed the hungry, help the poor, speak up for the mistreated, and show kindness to the stranger, we are serving Christ.
So, how should migrants living in foreign lands be treated? With respect. With patience. With fairness. With mercy. With the same love we would want for ourselves and our families. The Bible’s message is simple: do not oppress the stranger; love the stranger.
