Word of Encouragement: Be Careful What You Hear

There is so much noise right now. Political talk, social media debates, opinions, headlines, videos, comments—it can feel like everybody is talking at the same time. And in the middle of all of that, we need to remember what Jesus said: “Be careful what you hear.” That is not just a church saying. That is everyday wisdom.

In Mark 4:24, Jesus was teaching His followers to pay attention to what they were listening to and how they were listening. He had just shared the Parable of the Sower, where the seed is the Word of God and the soil is the heart. So, in plain words, what we keep letting into our ears can either help our faith grow or slowly choke it out.

Let’s be honest, we live in a time where everyone has something to say. The news has something to say. Politicians have something to say. Social media has something to say. Friends, family, podcasts, and comment sections all have something to say. But just because something is loud does not mean it is true. Just because it is popular does not mean it is wise. And just because it stirs up your emotions does not mean it came from God.

That is why we have to be careful about what we take in. We cannot keep feeding on anger, fear, gossip, division, and confusion and expect our hearts to stay healthy. What we listen to over and over starts shaping how we think. Then how we think starts showing up in how we talk, how we treat people, and how we handle life.

Jesus was not saying we should pretend nothing is happening in the world. He was telling us to listen with discernment. Before we receive everything we hear, we need to ask ourselves a few questions: Does this line up with God’s Word? Is this producing peace, or is it feeding fear? Is this pulling me closer to truth, or pulling me into offense? Is this helping me love people better, or is it making my heart hard?

What we give our attention to really matters. If we keep giving our attention to outrage, outrage will grow in us. If we keep feeding on fear, fear will take root. But when we give attention to the words of Jesus, something different starts growing in us—peace, wisdom, grace, understanding, and strength.

God’s Word is like seed. It may start small in the heart, but when we receive it, protect it, and live it out, it grows. Spiritual growth does not always happen overnight. But if we keep giving God’s Word the right place in our hearts, it will produce fruit in our lives.

So in this season, be careful what you hear. Be careful what you repeat. Be careful what you let sit in your spirit. Do not let political arguments, social media drama, or voices of confusion become louder than the voice of God.

Choose truth. Guard your heart. Respond with wisdom, kindness, and grace. You do not have to react to everything you hear. You do not have to carry every argument you see. Let the Word of Christ have the highest place in your soul.

Encouragement for today: Everything you hear does not deserve a home in your heart. Let God’s Word be the voice that shapes you, steadies you, and leads you in truth.

So take a deep breath and be encouraged. You do not have to be tossed around by every headline, every argument, or every opinion. Stay close to God’s Word, keep your heart tender, and let His voice be the one that settles you. In a world full of noise, God is still speaking peace, truth, and direction to those who are willing to listen.
