Jesus said that if we have faith as small as a mustard seed, we can speak to a mountain and it will move (Matthew 17:20; Luke 17:6). That is an amazing picture, isn’t it? A tiny seed. A huge mountain. And right in the middle of it all, a powerful God who can do more than we can imagine.
Think about a mustard seed for a moment. It is tiny—so small you could almost lose it in the palm of your hand. But once it is planted, watered, and cared for, it can grow into something much bigger than you would expect. Faith can be like that too. It may begin quietly, but when it is placed in God’s hands, it can grow stronger, reach deeper, and stand taller than we ever thought possible.
Small Faith Can Still Be Strong Faith
Sometimes we think our faith has to be huge before God can use it. We may think, “I do not pray enough,” “I do not know enough,” or “I am not strong enough.” But Jesus did not say we needed faith the size of a mountain. He said faith the size of a mustard seed was enough. That is good news, because the power is not in how big our faith feels. The power is in the God we trust.
So even when your faith feels small, do not count it out. God can work with what you bring Him. When you feel weak, He is still strong. When you cannot see the whole path ahead, He still knows the way. And when the mountain looks too big, He reminds you that it is not bigger than Him.
Faith Must Be Put Into Action
Faith is not just saying, “I believe,” and then doing nothing. Faith moves us to take a step. Jesus talked about speaking to the mountain, which reminds us that we do not have to sit and stare at our problems in fear. We can pray with expectation. We can trust when things are uncertain. We can take the next right step, believing that God is already at work.
In everyday life, faith may look like forgiving someone, trying again after a setback, praying when you feel tired, showing up when you feel afraid, or choosing to believe that God is working even when you cannot see it yet.
God Helps Us Face Our Mountains
We all have mountains in life. For some of us, that mountain may be sickness, worry, grief, family trouble, money problems, fear, or a situation that feels too hard to change. But Jesus was reminding us that no obstacle is bigger than God. The mountain may be real, but so is God’s power. What looks impossible to us is still possible with Him.
Having faith does not mean life will always be easy. It means we do not have to face life alone. We can bring our needs, struggles, and questions to God and trust Him to work in His way and in His time. And while we wait, we can keep standing, keep hoping, and keep believing.
Faith Grows Day by Day
Mustard seed faith reminds us that small beginnings still matter. A short prayer matters. One small step of obedience matters. A little hope matters. A quiet decision to keep trusting God matters. Over time, those small acts of faith can become roots of strength, courage, and peace.
So if your faith feels small today, do not beat yourself up. Bring that small faith to a big God. Keep praying. Keep believing. Keep moving forward. The seed may be small, but in God’s hands, it can become something powerful.
Remember: Small faith is not weak faith when it is placed in a mighty God. Keep trusting Him—your mustard seed can still move mountains.
Call to action: Today, take one small step of faith. Say the prayer. Make the call. Forgive the person. Start again. Trust God with the mountain in front of you, and believe that even your mustard seed faith can grow into something powerful in His hands.
