Part 2: Standing Firm in Your Identity in Christ
The Battle for Your Identity
Even when God has spoken truth over your life, there will still be voices that try to tell you otherwise. You may hear thoughts like, “You are not good enough,” “You made too many mistakes,” or “God cannot use you.”
Those lies can come through fear, past hurt, comparison, rejection, or even the opinions of other people. But those lies are not your identity.
Jesus said in John 10:10 that the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but He came so we could have life. One way the enemy tries to steal from us is by attacking how we see ourselves.
That is why it is so important to learn what God says about you and hold on to it. When you know the truth, you can recognize the lies and refuse to live under them.
What It Means to Be “In Christ”
Being “in Christ” means you belong to Him. It means your life is no longer defined by sin, shame, failure, rejection, or what others think. Your identity is now based on what God says.
In Christ, you are loved by God, forgiven through Jesus, made new, free from your past, and given purpose.
Who God Says You Are
The Bible gives us many reminders of who we are in Christ. You are a child of God, chosen, made new, forgiven, righteous in Christ, free, and called. These are not just nice words. They are truths to help you stand strong when life feels uncertain.
You may not always feel these things, but your feelings do not change God’s truth. God’s Word is stronger than fear, shame, or doubt.
How to Grow Stronger in Your Identity
Knowing who you are in Christ takes time. It grows as you walk with God day by day. You can strengthen your identity by reading God’s Word, praying honestly, spending time with other believers, speaking God’s truth over yourself, and living what you believe.
The more you fill your heart with God’s truth, the easier it becomes to recognize what does not belong. Over time, you begin to see yourself the way God sees you.
A Personal Reflection
Some years ago, I became curious about the meaning of my name and the names of my two sons. I discovered that my first name, Aleatha, means “truth,” and my middle name means “free.” That touched my heart because it reminded me that God is personal. He knows us by name, and He knows the purpose He placed inside of us. I was reminded by a ministry leader that I “always search for the truth,” and to me, that was confirmation that God truly calls us by name and reveals purpose through the details of who we are.
God does not see you as ordinary, overlooked, or forgotten. He created you with care. He knows your story, your heart, and the desires you may not even know how to explain.
Why This Matters
When you understand your identity in Christ, it changes how you live. You do not have to be ruled by fear, shame, comparison, or the need to prove yourself.
You can walk with confidence because you know God loves you. You can face hard seasons because you know God is with you. You can stop comparing yourself to others because God made you unique. You can forgive because you have been forgiven. You can live with purpose because your life belongs to God.
Conclusion: Step Into Who God Says You Are
Your true identity is not found in your past, your mistakes, your pain, your title, or other people’s opinions. Your true identity is found in Christ.
You are loved. You are chosen. You are forgiven. You are made new. You are called. When life feels uncertain, hold on to what God says about you. Let His truth be louder than every lie.
You belong to Him—and that is the best identity you could ever have.
