Let’s be honest: laws are supposed to be good. They are meant to protect people, keep order, defend the innocent, and make sure justice is served. When laws are guided by truth, righteousness, and the fear of God, they become a blessing to society. Scripture reminds us that righteousness and justice are the foundation of God’s throne (Psalm 89:14). Laws should stand as a shield for the weak, a voice for those who may not have the strength to speak for themselves, and a reminder that no one should be above what is right.
But the truth is, even something created for good can become dangerous when it falls into the wrong hands. When dishonesty, intimidation, unrighteousness, and injustice are allowed to prevail, the law can be twisted into a weapon. The Bible gives a strong warning against those who make unjust laws and deprive the poor and vulnerable of their rights (Isaiah 10:1–2). Instead of protecting the innocent, the law can be used to silence them. Instead of exposing wrongdoing, it can be used to cover it up. Instead of bringing peace, it can bring fear, pain, and oppression.
That is why righteousness matters. A law without truth has no real justice in it. Authority without humility can become abuse. Power without accountability can become oppression. Proverbs 21:15 says that when justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous, but terror to evildoers. And justice without God’s righteousness becomes empty, because it may look official on the outside while being broken on the inside.
We should never forget that the purpose of law is not just to win arguments, control people, or protect the powerful. The purpose of law should be to uphold what is right. Micah 6:8 reminds us that the Lord requires us to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him. And when those in authority forget that, they must remember that there is a higher Judge who sees every hidden motive, every false accusation, every act of intimidation, and every injustice done in secret.
At the end of the day, laws are good when they are used with honesty, fairness, and righteousness. But when they are used to intimidate, deceive, or destroy, they lose their righteous purpose. The cry of God’s heart is clear: “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream” (Amos 5:24). May we always stand for truth, speak for justice, and remember that where righteousness stands, darkness cannot prevail.
