Have you ever heard someone say, “Just follow your heart”?
It sounds nice, doesn’t it? The phrase usually means we should make choices based on what we truly feel, want, or desire. And sometimes, our heart can help us pay attention to things that matter deeply to us.
But here is the truth: our heart is not always a safe leader. Our feelings are real, but they are not always right. Sometimes emotions can cloud our judgment and make us believe something is okay when it really is not.
Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” In simple words, our heart can trick us. It can tell us bitterness is justified, pride is confidence, jealousy is concern, or revenge is fairness.
That is why we cannot live by feelings alone. We need God’s Word to help us see clearly. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Jesus also said in Luke 6:45 that “out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” That means what we carry inside will eventually show up in our words, our attitude, and our actions. If anger, pride, fear, or selfishness is sitting in our heart, it will come out. But if God is filling our heart with love, mercy, wisdom, and patience, that will come out too.
This is not something to make us feel condemned. It is something to make us pause and be honest with God. He already knows what is in us, and He still loves us enough to help us change.
A good prayer to pray is Psalm 139:23-24: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” That is a powerful prayer because it invites God into the places we may not even see clearly ourselves.
And here is the beautiful part: God does not just expose what is wrong; He helps make us new. Ezekiel 36:26 says, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.”
So instead of saying, “I’m just following my heart,” maybe we should pray, “Lord, lead my heart.” Let God’s truth guide your feelings. Let His Spirit correct your reactions. Let His Word shape your choices.
Reflection: Before I trust every feeling, reaction, or thought, I want to ask God, “Lord, is this pleasing to You?”
Today’s challenge: Take a quiet moment and ask God to search your heart. If He shows you something that needs to change, take one step of obedience. Apologize. Forgive. Let go of bitterness. Speak with kindness. Go back to His Word.
Prayer: Lord, search my heart. Show me what needs to change. Do not let me be led by feelings that can fool me. Fill me with Your truth, guard my words, and help my life produce good fruit. Amen.
May this be our prayer today: Lord, guard my heart, guide my words, and help me walk in Your truth.
