“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not…” — 2 Corinthians 4:3-4
The gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ. It tells us that Jesus died for our sins, rose again, and gives salvation to everyone who believes in Him. Paul said, “Christ died for our sins… he was buried… and he rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). He also said the gospel is “the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” (Romans 1:16).
But Paul also warned that not everyone sees the gospel clearly. If the gospel is hidden, it is hidden to those who are lost. This does not mean the gospel has no power. It means that sin, unbelief, pride, fear, and the enemy can blind people’s minds so they do not see the beauty of Jesus.
The devil’s desire is to keep people in darkness. If he cannot stop the gospel from being preached, he will try to stop people from listening. He will try to make them reject the truth, misunderstand the truth, or become angry at the truth. But Jesus is stronger than darkness. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12).
As Christians, our responsibility is not to change the gospel, water it down, or keep it hidden. We are called to share it plainly and live it sincerely. Paul said, “For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord” (2 Corinthians 4:5). The gospel is not about drawing attention to ourselves. It is about pointing people to Jesus, the Savior and Deliverer, who alone has the power to save.
God has placed this treasure in earthen vessels (2 Corinthians 4:7). That means He uses weak, humble people to carry His powerful message. The apostles were not perfect men, and ministers today are not perfect either. But God receives glory when His power works through ordinary people. His mercy helps us, holds us, and carries us to the end.
The light of the gospel does more than shine around us; it shines in us. Just as God spoke light into the first creation, He speaks light into the new heart. “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts” (2 Corinthians 4:6). When Christ shines in the heart, eyes begin to open, lives begin to change, and hope begins to rise.
So if someone does not receive the gospel right away, do not give up. Keep loving them. Keep praying for them. Keep speaking truth with grace. Only God can open blinded eyes, but He can use our witness, our kindness, and our prayers. The gospel may be hidden to some, but it is still able to save everyone who believes.
Today, let us ask God to help us share the gospel in simple words, with humble hearts, and with faith that His truth still saves. We do not preach ourselves. We preach Christ Jesus the Lord. Darkness cannot overcome the light of Jesus, and the love of Christ shining in our hearts can lead others to the hope of salvation.
Prayer: Lord, open the eyes of those who are lost. Let the light of Jesus shine in their hearts. Help us preach Christ with love, truth, humility, and boldness. Keep us faithful to Your gospel, and use our lives to point others to Jesus. In Jesus’ name, amen.
