“The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me.” — Psalm 138:8
“He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 1:6
Philippians 3:12 brings comfort to my heart. Paul says, in simple words, “I keep reaching for the life Christ has called me to, because Christ Jesus has already taken hold of me.” That means my walk with God does not begin with how tightly I hold on to Him. It begins with the truth that Jesus has already taken hold of me.
There are days when I feel my weakness deeply. I want to stay close to Jesus, but my mind wanders. My heart gets tired. I stumble in ways I wish I did not. Sometimes I wonder if a steady life with Christ is meant for someone stronger than me.
But then I remember this truth: abiding in Christ is not a prize for the strong. It is a resting place for the weak. Jesus does not invite me to abide in Him because I can keep myself perfectly. He invites me because He is willing to keep me faithfully.
Paul knew he had not already reached perfection. He was still growing, still pressing forward, and still reaching for the life God had called him to. He did not stop because of past mistakes, and he did not become satisfied with past progress. He kept moving toward Christ.
That is how the Christian life works. We are not saved by our own strength, and we are not kept by our own strength. Eternal life is God’s gift, and it comes through Jesus Christ. There is no way home to heaven except through Christ, who is our Way.
Sometimes I can think Jesus saved me by grace, but now I must keep myself by effort. So I try harder, fall short, feel ashamed, and grow discouraged. But the same Savior who first said, “Come to Me,” still says, “Abide in Me.” The grace that brought me near is the grace that keeps me near.
Jesus does not call me close and then leave me alone to manage the journey. He stays with me. He holds me gently and firmly. He teaches me patiently. He strengthens me quietly. Like a loving father holding a child’s hand on a steep path, He does not shame me for needing help. He gives me the help I need.
This is why Paul could keep pressing on. He was not trusting his own power to hold on perfectly. He knew Christ had already taken hold of him. That truth gave him courage, and it gives me courage too. I can keep going because I am being kept.
If Jesus has taken hold of me, He has not done it lightly or carelessly. He knows my fears. He sees my weakness. He understands the places where I feel tired, unsure, and small. Still, He calls me closer, not with harshness, but with love.
I do not have to carry the full weight of my spiritual life on my own shoulders. I can bring my weakness to Him. I can bring my fear to Him. I can bring my wandering heart to Him. When I feel like I cannot hold on, I can rest in this truth: He is holding on to me.
My weakness does not have to drive me into despair. It can drive me into the arms of Christ. Even with trembling faith, I can whisper, “Lord, I cannot keep myself, but I trust You to keep me.” That prayer is not failure. It is faith leaning on the Faithful One.
This also teaches me to be patient with other believers. We may not all grow at the same pace, and we may not agree on every smaller matter. But if we belong to Christ, we can walk together in the great truths we share and trust God to give more light in His time.
So today, I can rest. Jesus has taken hold of me with mercy. He is not surprised by my frailty, and He is not finished with me. I will keep turning toward Him. I will keep trusting His heart. I will keep abiding, not because my grip is perfect, but because His love is steady and His hands are strong.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You just as I am—weak, needy, and often unsure of myself. Thank You for taking hold of me before I ever knew how to hold on to You. When my heart is tired, let me rest in Your faithfulness. When I am afraid, speak peace to the quiet places inside me. When I stumble, do not let shame keep me away; draw me back gently and remind me that Your mercy is still near. Teach me to stop striving in my own strength and to trust Your keeping love. Hold me close today, Lord. Keep my heart near Yours. Amen.
