Superficial Faith: Understanding Shallow Belief and Relationship with God

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). This verse teaches us that real faith is more than words. Faith is trust in God even when we cannot see everything clearly. It gives us confidence that God is true, His promises are sure, and His Word can be trusted.

Faith has always been the mark of God’s people. From the beginning, those who pleased God believed His Word, trusted His promises, and obeyed Him by faith. Hebrews says, “Without faith it is impossible to please Him” (Hebrews 11:6). True faith receives what God has revealed, trusts in the work of Christ, and expects God to do what He has promised.

What Hebrews 11:1 Means

  • Substance: Faith gives us a firm foundation. It helps us hold on to what God has promised, even before we see it fully.
  • Evidence: Faith gives inner conviction. It helps us know that unseen spiritual things are real because God has spoken.
  • Things hoped for: Faith is not wishful thinking. It is confidence in God’s promises, including eternal life, resurrection, and the return of Christ (John 14:1–3; Titus 1:2).

But not every kind of belief is deep faith. Many people say they believe in God, but their relationship with Him stays on the surface. This is what we can call superficial faith. It is a shallow belief that knows religious words, but does not fully surrender the heart to God.

What Is Superficial Faith?

Superficial faith means saying we believe in God, but not letting that belief shape our daily life. It is like having a relationship in name only. A person may go to church, say prayers, or talk about God, but still keep their heart far from Him. Jesus spoke about people who honored God with their lips while their hearts were far away (Matthew 15:8–9; Isaiah 29:13).

Signs of Shallow Belief

  • You only think about God when you are in trouble or need something.
  • You hear God’s Word but do not obey it (James 1:22).
  • Your faith does not affect how you treat people, forgive others, or make choices.
  • You rarely pray, read Scripture, or seek God unless life becomes hard.
  • You want the comfort of God’s promises, but not the correction of His Word.

Why Superficial Faith Happens

Superficial faith can happen when people are busy, distracted, wounded, proud, or simply used to going through religious motions. Sometimes faith is something we learned from family or culture, but never truly made personal. Jesus described some people as seed on rocky ground. They received the word with joy, but because they had no deep root, they fell away when trouble came (Matthew 13:20–21).

God Wants More Than Surface Religion

God is not looking only for outward activity. He wants the heart. The Lord told Samuel, “Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). David prayed, “Create in me a clean heart, O God” (Psalm 51:10). True faith is not perfect faith, but it is honest faith. It turns toward God, listens to His Word, and desires to grow.

How to Go Deeper with God

If you want a deeper relationship with God, begin with honesty. Tell Him where you really are. Ask Him to strengthen your faith. Spend time in Scripture, pray regularly, obey what God shows you, and stay close to other believers who encourage you to grow. Faith grows as we hear the Word of Christ (Romans 10:17). We also grow when we abide in Jesus, because apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:4–5).

A deep relationship with God will change the way we live. It will affect our words, our choices, our love, our patience, and our obedience. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Real faith does not stay hidden on the surface. It begins in the heart and shows up in daily life.

A Practical Prayer

Lord, help me not to settle for shallow faith. Draw my heart closer to You. Teach me to trust Your Word, obey Your voice, and seek You daily. Remove anything in me that is only outward or empty. Give me a sincere heart, a stronger faith, and a real relationship with You through Jesus Christ. Amen.
