To seek the Lord means to turn our hearts toward Him. It means wanting to know Him, obey Him, and walk in His ways. The book of Malachi shows us that God wants more than empty habits. He wants sincere love, faithful worship, and changed lives.
Malachi brought God’s message to the people of Judah after they returned from exile. Many had become tired and careless in their faith. Yet God still called them back to Himself.
God Calls Us Back
God begins by saying, “I have loved you” (Malachi 1:2). Even when the people doubted His love, God had not stopped loving them. Seeking the Lord begins with remembering that He loves us and invites us to return.
The priests were giving God damaged sacrifices and failing to honor His name (Malachi 1:6–8). The people were also giving God only part of their hearts. This reminds us not to offer God careless worship. He deserves our best—not only our words, but also our choices and daily lives.
God gave a simple invitation: “Return to me, and I will return to you” (Malachi 3:7). When we have wandered away, we can come back through honest prayer and repentance. God is ready to receive those who sincerely seek Him.
The Lord Comes to Cleanse
Malachi promised that a messenger would prepare the way for the Lord (Malachi 3:1). The New Testament connects this preparing work with John the Baptist, who called people to repent and get ready for Jesus (Matthew 11:10; Mark 1:2–4).
Malachi also describes the Lord as a refiner who purifies silver (Malachi 3:2–3). God may show us attitudes, habits, or sins that need to change. His correction is not meant to destroy us. It is meant to cleanse us and help us become more faithful.
Those who seek the Lord do not need to pretend that they are perfect. They can come honestly, ask for mercy, and allow God to change them from the inside.
Simple Ways to Seek the Lord
- Pray honestly. Tell God what is in your heart and ask Him to guide you (Jeremiah 29:13).
- Read His Word. Listen for what God wants to teach you (Psalm 119:105).
- Turn away from sin. Confess what is wrong and choose God’s way (Malachi 3:7).
- Worship sincerely. Give God your attention, gratitude, and best effort (Malachi 1:6).
- Trust His character. God says, “I the Lord do not change” (Malachi 3:6).
A Hopeful Promise
Malachi ends with both a warning and a promise. For those who fear the Lord’s name, the “Sun of righteousness” will rise with healing (Malachi 4:2). God also promises a work of restored hearts (Malachi 4:5–6).
If you feel far from God, begin today. Speak to Him. Open His Word. Turn from what is wrong. Ask Him to make your heart clean. The Lord is faithful, His love does not fail, and He welcomes those who truly seek Him.
