Sometimes people say, “They don’t do anything for us.” But God does not teach us to help only those who can help us back. We do not love people because they earned it. We love because God loved us first (1 John 4:19).
God’s love is faithful. People often fail, but God keeps His promises. He promised Abraham that all nations would be blessed through his family (Genesis 12:2–3; Genesis 22:18). That promise points us to Jesus, the Savior who gave His life for our sins and rose again.
Abraham trusted God and was willing to give Him what was most precious. Yet Abraham was not saved because his actions were perfect. He was counted righteous because he believed God (Genesis 15:6; Romans 4:1–5). True faith trusts God’s character, authority, and promises.
Faith That Bears Fruit
Jesus said, “Have faith in God” (Mark 11:22). He taught His disciples to pray with faith and not live in doubt (Mark 11:23–24). Faith is more than words. Real faith changes the heart and produces good works (James 2:17).
God Cares for the Forgotten
God sees people who are hurt, poor, lonely, or pushed aside. He “executes justice for the fatherless and the widow” and loves the foreigner (Deuteronomy 10:18). He tells us, “Learn to do good; seek justice; correct oppression” (Isaiah 1:17).
God also commanded His people not to mistreat widows, orphans, foreigners, or the poor, and not to deny them justice (Exodus 22:22; Deuteronomy 24:17–22; Zechariah 7:10). Caring for vulnerable people is one way we reflect His heart.
Love Without Keeping Score
Before Christ saved us, we were trapped in sin. But God made us alive with Christ (Ephesians 2:4–5). Jesus loved us when we could not repay Him. Now we are free to love and serve others without asking what we will get in return.
Jesus said the greatest commandments are to love God and love our neighbor (Matthew 22:37–40). He also taught us to give without expecting repayment (Luke 6:32–35).
So when we are tempted to say, “They don’t do anything for us,” let us remember what God has done for us. He gave His Son, forgave our sins, and gave us new life. Love does not ask, “What can they do for me?” Love asks, “How can I show them the heart of God?”
Summary
God’s unconditional love calls His people to bless others, regardless of what they can offer in return. The teaching connects God’s covenant faithfulness with justice, mercy, and practical service.
- Scripture portrays God as defending the vulnerable, including widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor, while commanding His people to pursue justice and reject oppression.
- Because Christ loved and redeemed them when they could do nothing for Him, believers are called to love their neighbors and reflect God’s heart through service.
Because God has blessed us, let us be a blessing to others.
