How Nativism, Selfishness, and Pride Can Weaken a Nation
A nation is strongest when its people walk in humility, justice, and love. But when fear, selfishness, and pride grow in the hearts of people, they can slowly weaken the spirit of a nation. This is not about blaming one group of people. It is a call for all of us to examine our hearts before God.
It is natural for people to love their home, their culture, and their country. Love for one’s nation can be a good thing when it leads to service, gratitude, and responsibility. But love of country becomes dangerous when it turns into fear or hatred of the stranger. God’s Word reminds us to treat foreigners with compassion. Leviticus 19:34 says to love the stranger as yourself, and Exodus 22:21 says not to mistreat or oppress a foreigner.
Selfishness can also harm a nation. When people think only about their own comfort, group, or success, others can be forgotten. The poor, the weak, the widow, the orphan, and the foreigner are often the first to suffer. Philippians 2:3-4 teaches us not to act from selfish ambition, but to value others and care about their needs too. James 3:16 warns that selfish ambition brings disorder and harmful actions.
Pride is another danger. Pride can make individuals, leaders, and even nations believe they do not need correction, wisdom, or God’s guidance. Proverbs 16:18 says pride goes before destruction, and James 4:6 says God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. A proud nation may stop listening, stop learning, and stop repenting.
The Bible shows that God cares deeply about justice. Jeremiah 7:5-7 connects the security of the land with doing justice and not oppressing the foreigner, the orphan, or the widow. Isaiah 10:1-2 warns against unjust laws that take advantage of the poor and deny justice to those in need. These scriptures remind us that the health of a nation is measured not only by power or wealth, but also by how it treats vulnerable people.
When fear of outsiders grows, neighbors can begin to see one another as enemies. When selfishness grows, compassion becomes weak. When pride grows, humility becomes rare. These things can divide families, communities, and nations.
But there is hope. God calls His people to humility, prayer, repentance, and healing. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says that if God’s people humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways, He will hear, forgive, and heal their land.
A strong nation is not built by fear, cruelty, or arrogance. It is built by righteousness, justice, mercy, and love of neighbor. Proverbs 14:34 says righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. If we want our nation to be healthy, we must ask God to help us love rightly, welcome wisely, serve generously, and walk humbly with Him.
